2	2		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3		recognize Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, who is retiring as the
4	4		superintendent of schools of the Arlington Independent School
5	5		District on August 31, 2023, after a distinguished 33-year career
6	6		in public education; and
7	7		WHEREAS, Dr. Marcelo Cavazos joined the Arlington
8	8		Independent School District in 1999 as an associate
9	9		superintendent for instruction, and he served as the interim
10	10		deputy superintendent before being named deputy superintendent
11	11		in 2009; he served the district with distinction, and in 2012, he
12	12		was named superintendent of the Arlington Independent School
13	13		District; and
14	14		WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the district developed 13
15	15		specialized academies focused on the areas of leadership
16	16		development, early college education, fine arts, dual-language
17	17		instruction, and curricula in science, technology, engineering,
18	18		and math; Dr. Cavazos has received many accolades for his
19		-	outstanding work throughout his career; he received the YMCA
20		-	Citizen of the Year Award, and he was named the 2016 Texas
	19	+	outstanding work throughout his career, and he received the YMCA
	20	+	Citizen of the Year Award and he was named the 2016 Texas
21	21		Superintendent of the Year and was selected as the Texas nominee
22	22		for the 2017 American Association of School Administrators
23	23		Superintendent of the Year Award; and
24	24		WHEREAS, Dr. Cavazos has also been recognized for his
25		-	service to his community, ~~and~~ he has served on the boards of
	25	+	service to his community, in 2012; he has served on the boards of
26	26		numerous agencies and organizations, including the Texas School
27	27		Alliance, Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County, and United Way
28		-	of Tarrant County, and he is involved in his community through his
29		-	membership in such groups as the Rotary Club and Lions Club; and

30	31		WHEREAS, A devoted husband to his wife, Nora, and a loving
31	32		father to his children, Theresa and Diego, Dr. Cavazos has earned
32	33		the respect and admiration of his community members, his
33	34		colleagues, and the students and parents of the district for his
34	35		diligence and wise leadership as an administrator and for his
35	36		outstanding commitment to excellence in education; it is truly
36	37		fitting that he receive special recognition on his dedicated
37	38		service to the Arlington Independent School District; now,
38	39		therefore, be it
39	40		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
40	41		Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Marcelo Cavazos on his
41	42		invaluable contributions to public education in the state and
42	43		extend to him congratulations on his retirement and best wishes
43	44		for the future; and, be it further
44	45		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
45	46		him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
