No. 202 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Sombrero Festival is taking place on February 23 through 25, 2023, at Washington Park in Brownsville; and WHEREAS, The Sombrero Festival was established in 1986 as part of the preexisting Charro Days fiesta, an annual pre-Lenten celebration held in Brownsville in cooperation with Matamoros, Mexico; named in honor of the Mexican cowboys known as charros, the event commemorates the Mexican heritage of the Brownsville area and helps strengthen the bonds between border communities of the U.S. and Mexico; and WHEREAS, Each year, the Sombrero Festival draws visitors from around the Lone Star State and beyond by featuring a wide range of entertainment, including music from well-known Hispanic artists, competitions, food, and rides for children; the festival also sponsors several other events earlier in the year, such as an annual costume gala and a kayak fun race; proceeds from the festival go toward local nonprofit organizations that support recreation, beautification, tourism, and higher education in the area; and WHEREAS, The Sombrero Festival is organized by an all-volunteer board of directors, which benefits from the able leadership of its 2023 president, Lupita G. Vera; Ms. Vera became the board's treasurer in 2006 and went on to serve the festival as vice president of events and vice president of marketing before taking on her current role; and WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Sombrero Festival has brought together neighbors and visitors for a fun-filled, family-friendly celebration, and all those who contribute to its success are indeed deserving of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 2023 Sombrero Festival in Brownsville and extend to its organizers sincere best wishes for a successful event.
