| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Sombrero Festival is taking place on February |

| 3 | 3 | | 23 through 25, 2023, at Washington Park in Brownsville; and |

| 4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, The Sombrero Festival was established in 1986 as |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | part of the preexisting Charro Days fiesta, an annual pre-Lenten |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | celebration held in Brownsville in cooperation with Matamoros, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Mexico; named in honor of the Mexican cowboys known as charros, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the event commemorates the Mexican heritage of the Brownsville |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | area and helps strengthen the bonds between border communities of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the U.S. and Mexico; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the Sombrero Festival draws visitors |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | from around the Lone Star State and beyond by featuring a wide |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | range of entertainment, including music from well-known Hispanic |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | artists, competitions, food, and rides for children; the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | festival also sponsors several other events earlier in the year, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | such as an annual costume gala and a kayak fun race; proceeds from |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the festival go toward local nonprofit organizations that |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | support recreation, beautification, tourism, and higher |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | education in the area; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The Sombrero Festival is organized by an |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | all-volunteer board of directors, which benefits from the able |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | leadership of its 2023 president, Lupita G. Vera; Ms. Vera became |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the board's treasurer in 2006 and went on to serve the festival as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | vice president of events and vice president of marketing before |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | taking on her current role; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Sombrero Festival has |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | brought together neighbors and visitors for a fun-filled, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | family-friendly celebration, and all those who contribute to its |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | success are indeed deserving of special recognition; now, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | therefore, be it |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 2023 Sombrero Festival in |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Brownsville and extend to its organizers sincere best wishes for |

| 34 | 34 | | a successful event. |
