1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 229
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize Erath County, the City of Stephenville, the
4	4	Stephenville Independent School District, and Tarleton State
5	5	University, representatives of which are gathering at the State
6	6	Capitol on March 1, 2023, to celebrate their many outstanding
7	7	achievements; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Erath County was formed when John M. Stephen,
9	9	surveyor George B. Erath, and a group of 30 pioneers settled on
10	10	land that Stephen had purchased from John Blair, a friend of
11	11	James Bowie, hero of the Battle of the Alamo; Stephenville was
12	12	officially chosen as the Erath County seat in 1856 after Stephen
13	13	agreed to donate the land, build a courthouse on the square, and
14	14	establish churches; Erath County grew as an agricultural center
15	15	and is now the leading milk producer of Texas; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Stephenville, founded in 1854, and situated about
17	17	70 miles southwest of Fort Worth, was permanently incorporated in
18	18	1889 and became a center for agricultural and livestock
19	19	production; and
20	20	WHEREAS, A wonderful community with a population of more
21	21	than 21,000 residents and a thriving array of industries,
22	22	Stephenville is the Texas Historic Commission's newest
23	23	designated Main Street community and showcases the beautiful
24	24	1892 Erath County Courthouse, designed by James Riely Gordon,
25	25	renowned for his landmark Texas county courthouses, and the more
26	26	than 23 city blocks that surround it; and
27	27	WHEREAS, The Stephenville Independent School District
28	28	provides a secure learning environment for students and prepares
29	29	them to become knowledgeable and engaged citizens that
30	30	contribute to society by emphasizing the core values of
31	31	initiative, integrity, and growth; Stephenville's students have
32	32	performed notably well on standardized tests and in the
33	33	University Interscholastic League's Lone Star Cup; and
34	34	WHEREAS, Stephenville is home to Tarleton State
35	35	University, a member of The Texas A&M University System; the
36	36	university was established on September 4, 1899, and is known for
37	37	its mascot, the Texas Rider; nicknamed the "Texans," the Tarleton
38	38	State student body is competitive in academics and in athletics
39	39	and has students from 46 states and 32 foreign countries; the
40	40	university's College of Business is accredited by the
41	41	Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs and by
42	42	the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which
43	43	accredits less than five percent of the world's business schools;
44	44	now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
46	46	Legislature, hereby commend Erath County, the City of
47	47	Stephenville, Stephenville Independent School District, and
48	48	Tarleton State University on their many contributions to shaping
49	49	the future of our great state; and, be it further
50	50	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
51	51	them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
