2	2	WHEREAS, Students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators,
3	3	and members of the board of regents from the University of Houston
4	4	are visiting Austin on March 2, 2023, to participate in University
5	5	of Houston Day at the State Capitol; and
6	6	WHEREAS, The Tier One campus is located in the nation's
7	7	fourth-largest city, within a region that is home to a quarter of
8	8	the state's population and that generates nearly a third of the
9	9	state's gross product; the student body, numbering more than
10	10	46,000, including many first-generation college students,
11	11	mirrors the rich cultural tapestry of Houston; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Each year, the university awards over 10,000
13	13	degrees in 277 undergraduate and graduate academic programs; it
14	14	now counts more than 326,000 alumni, many of whom stay in Texas,
15	15	where they contribute to the success of our communities and
16	16	state; and
17	17	WHEREAS, In the 16th year under the leadership of
18	18	chancellor and president Renu Khator, the University of Houston
19	19	has set its sights on being ranked among our country's top 50
20	20	public universities, which will be achieved as a result of
21	21	rapidly improving graduation rates, the ability to improve the
22	22	social mobility of its students, and the recognition of the
23	23	research excellence of its faculty; and
24	24	WHEREAS, The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of
25	25	Medicine, established after the passage of H.B. 826 during the
26	26	86th Texas Legislative Session, was founded on a social mission
27	27	to improve health in underserved communities in Houston and
28	28	across Texas; the college emphasizes the importance primary care
29	29	plays in the health of all Texans, especially in urban and rural
30	30	communities, and it has already enrolled its third cohort of
31	31	students, with a total of 120 future doctors; and
32	32	WHEREAS, The university is home to nine nationally funded
33	33	research centers and 28 university research centers and
34	34	institutes, and it has spent over $200 million in research
35	35	expenditures annually, mainly in the critical areas of cyber and
36	36	national security, drug discovery and development, sustainable
37	37	communities and infrastructure, and accessible health care; and
38	38	WHEREAS, The University of Houston athletics competes in
39	39	17 different sports with more than 400 student-athletes; several
40	40	of the athletic teams have represented the university on the
41	41	national stage, including the Cougar men's basketball team led by
42	42	head coach Kelvin Sampson that has advanced to three NCAA Sweet
43	43	Sixteen tournaments in a row and competed in the Final Four in
44	44	2021; the 2022-2023 team earned a No. 1 ranking in the country
45	45	for the first time since the Phi Slama Jama era in the early
46	46	1980s; beginning in the summer of 2023, Houston will compete in a
47	47	Power 5 conference after its acceptance to join the Big 12
48	48	Conference; and
49	49	WHEREAS, For nearly a century, the University of Houston
50	50	has contributed significantly to creating generation after
51	51	generation of productive and responsible citizens; now,
52	52	therefore, be it
53	53	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
54	54	Legislature, hereby recognize March 2, 2023, as University of
55	55	Houston Day at the State Capitol and extend to all participants
56	56	sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable visit.
