3 | 3 | | gathering in Austin on February 28, 2023, to celebrate Texas |

4 | 4 | | Rural Broadband Day at the State Capitol; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1905, TTA represents the state's local |
---|
6 | 6 | | exchange telephone companies and relies heavily on the volunteer |
---|
7 | 7 | | efforts of its member officers and directors who provide voice |
---|
8 | 8 | | and data service to rural Texas; the association's 46 rural |
---|
9 | 9 | | telecommunications providers include telephone cooperatives, |
---|
10 | 10 | | small family-owned companies, and multistate operations; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Covering almost half of the Lone Star State's land |
---|
12 | 12 | | area and a large portion of the Texas-Mexico border, TTA member |
---|
13 | 13 | | companies serve some 1.4 million rural Texas households and 2,200 |
---|
14 | 14 | | rural schools, colleges, government agencies, and other anchor |
---|
15 | 15 | | institutions; thousands of miles of fiber optic and wireline |
---|
16 | 16 | | facilities form the backbone of the rural Texas |
---|
17 | 17 | | telecommunications network, enabling voice and wireless calls, |
---|
18 | 18 | | broadband, and a range of additional advanced services; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, TTA employs approximately 3,800 Texans in |
---|
20 | 20 | | full-time positions and creates thousands of jobs for |
---|
21 | 21 | | contractors, materials suppliers, and other rural Texas |
---|
22 | 22 | | businesses; working tirelessly during adversity, rural phone |
---|
23 | 23 | | companies and their technicians have helped ensure uninterrupted |
---|
24 | 24 | | connections for rural Texans during the challenges of the |
---|
25 | 25 | | COVID-19 pandemic; moreover, during Winter Storm Uri in 2021, |
---|
26 | 26 | | technicians braved dangerous conditions, often traveling long |
---|
27 | 27 | | distances to power remote switches with generators and to check |
---|
28 | 28 | | on the well-being of customers; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, For well over a century, TTA has played an |
---|
30 | 30 | | important role in keeping rural Texans connected, and it is |
---|
31 | 31 | | indeed a pleasure to join in recognizing the association for its |
---|
32 | 32 | | myriad contributions; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as Texas Rural |
---|
35 | 35 | | Broadband Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those |
---|
36 | 36 | | associated with the Texas Telephone Association sincere best |
