2	2	WHEREAS, VIVA San Antonio Day is taking place at the State
3	3	Capitol on February 28, 2023, and this occasion provides a
4	4	welcome opportunity to honor San Antonio residents for the
5	5	important contributions they are making to the Lone Star
6	6	State; and
7	7	WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
8	8	1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came
9	9	upon a river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony,
10	10	whose feast day was being celebrated; and
11	11	WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
12	12	Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which
13	13	would become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo,
14	14	the site where 189 brave defenders held the mission for 13 days
15	15	against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; the cry "Remember
16	16	the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texas Revolution;
17	17	today, the Alamo is a shrine and museum and is widely recognized
18	18	as the cradle of Texas liberty; and
19	19	WHEREAS, San Antonio was formally incorporated in 1837,
20	20	when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter;
21	21	the community retains its sense of history and tradition while
22	22	carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it continues to
23	23	serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where the rich
24	24	cultural influences of Native Americans, Old Mexico, German
25	25	immigrants, the Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep South
26	26	mingle and merge; and
27	27	WHEREAS, Known as Military City USA, San Antonio has a
28	28	proud military heritage, and great figures like Pershing,
29	29	Stilwell, Krueger, LeMay, Chennault, and Eisenhower served at
30	30	San Antonio military installations; today, the armed forces
31	31	facilities in the city include Fort Sam Houston, the headquarters
32	32	for the U.S. Army North and U.S. Army South, and Joint Base San
33	33	Antonio-Randolph, the home of the Air Education and Training
34	34	Command, the Air Force Recruiting Service, the Air Force
35	35	Personnel Center, and the Air Force Installation and Mission
36	36	Support Center; in addition, the city is the site of Joint Base
37	37	San Antonio-Lackland, the largest training wing in the United
38	38	States Air Force, which instructs all incoming airmen in basic
39	39	military training, along with vital National Guard and Air Force
40	40	Reserve missions; and
41	41	WHEREAS, The San Antonio Market is home to several
42	42	distinguished medical institutions, including Brooke Army
43	43	Medical Center, which houses the only Level I Trauma Center in
44	44	the Military Health System and the Center for the Intrepid, a
45	45	world-renowned rehabilitation facility; and
46	46	WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
47	47	development to San Antonio as its skilled workforce, excellent
48	48	institutions of public and higher education, and high quality of
49	49	life have attracted important corporate businesses and
50	50	industries to the city; and
51	51	WHEREAS, The city's chambers of commerce serve as leading
52	52	advocates for the business community and are dedicated to
53	53	building and sustaining San Antonio's diverse and prosperous
54	54	economy, particularly in the major local industries of health
55	55	care, manufacturing, aerospace, and information technology; and
56	56	WHEREAS, San Antonio has one of the largest concentrations
57	57	of cybersecurity professionals in the United States, with a
58	58	diverse workforce and globally competitive cybersecurity
59	59	ecosystem that is strategically organized through CyberSecurity
60	60	San Antonio; and
61	61	WHEREAS, Many people delight in visiting San Antonio each
62	62	year; in addition to the Alamo, highlights include La Villita,
63	63	San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Mission Trails, and the
64	64	famed Paseo del Rio, also known as The River Walk; among the other
65	65	attractions that make San Antonio one of the top tourist
66	66	destinations in the country are SeaWorld San Antonio and the Six
67	67	Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, as well as the PGA Tour Valero
68	68	Texas Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the five-time world champion San
69	69	Antonio Spurs; and
70	70	WHEREAS, A highlight of the city's robust event calendar is
71	71	the annual Fiesta San Antonio; first held more than 130 years
72	72	ago, the event was founded by a group of women who decorated
73	73	horse-drawn carriages for a parade in front of the Alamo and
74	74	battled with flower blossoms instead of bullets to honor the
75	75	heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto; and
76	76	WHEREAS, A city of great historical, cultural, and
77	77	economic importance, San Antonio is one of the treasures of the
78	78	Lone Star State, and its citizens may indeed take great pride in
79	79	the place they call home; now, therefore, be it
80	80	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
81	81	Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as VIVA San
82	82	Antonio Day at the State Capitol and extend to the city's
83	83	residents sincere best wishes for the future.
