22 WHEREAS, VIVA San Antonio Day is taking place at the State
33 Capitol on February 28, 2023, and this occasion provides a
44 welcome opportunity to honor San Antonio residents for the
55 important contributions they are making to the Lone Star
66 State; and
77 WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
88 1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came
99 upon a river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony,
1010 whose feast day was being celebrated; and
1111 WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
1212 Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which
1313 would become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo,
1414 the site where 189 brave defenders held the mission for 13 days
1515 against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; the cry "Remember
1616 the Alamo" became the rallying point of the Texas Revolution;
1717 today, the Alamo is a shrine and museum and is widely recognized
1818 as the cradle of Texas liberty; and
1919 WHEREAS, San Antonio was formally incorporated in 1837,
2020 when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter;
2121 the community retains its sense of history and tradition while
2222 carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it continues to
2323 serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where the rich
2424 cultural influences of Native Americans, Old Mexico, German
2525 immigrants, the Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep South
2626 mingle and merge; and
2727 WHEREAS, Known as Military City USA, San Antonio has a
2828 proud military heritage, and great figures like Pershing,
2929 Stilwell, Krueger, LeMay, Chennault, and Eisenhower served at
3030 San Antonio military installations; today, the armed forces
3131 facilities in the city include Fort Sam Houston, the headquarters
3232 for the U.S. Army North and U.S. Army South, and Joint Base San
3333 Antonio-Randolph, the home of the Air Education and Training
3434 Command, the Air Force Recruiting Service, the Air Force
3535 Personnel Center, and the Air Force Installation and Mission
3636 Support Center; in addition, the city is the site of Joint Base
3737 San Antonio-Lackland, the largest training wing in the United
3838 States Air Force, which instructs all incoming airmen in basic
3939 military training, along with vital National Guard and Air Force
4040 Reserve missions; and
4141 WHEREAS, The San Antonio Market is home to several
4242 distinguished medical institutions, including Brooke Army
4343 Medical Center, which houses the only Level I Trauma Center in
4444 the Military Health System and the Center for the Intrepid, a
4545 world-renowned rehabilitation facility; and
4646 WHEREAS, Recent years have brought remarkable economic
4747 development to San Antonio as its skilled workforce, excellent
4848 institutions of public and higher education, and high quality of
4949 life have attracted important corporate businesses and
5050 industries to the city; and
5151 WHEREAS, The city's chambers of commerce serve as leading
5252 advocates for the business community and are dedicated to
5353 building and sustaining San Antonio's diverse and prosperous
5454 economy, particularly in the major local industries of health
5555 care, manufacturing, aerospace, and information technology; and
5656 WHEREAS, San Antonio has one of the largest concentrations
5757 of cybersecurity professionals in the United States, with a
5858 diverse workforce and globally competitive cybersecurity
5959 ecosystem that is strategically organized through CyberSecurity
6060 San Antonio; and
6161 WHEREAS, Many people delight in visiting San Antonio each
6262 year; in addition to the Alamo, highlights include La Villita,
6363 San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Mission Trails, and the
6464 famed Paseo del Rio, also known as The River Walk; among the other
6565 attractions that make San Antonio one of the top tourist
6666 destinations in the country are SeaWorld San Antonio and the Six
6767 Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, as well as the PGA Tour Valero
6868 Texas Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the five-time world champion San
6969 Antonio Spurs; and
7070 WHEREAS, A highlight of the city's robust event calendar is
7171 the annual Fiesta San Antonio; first held more than 130 years
7272 ago, the event was founded by a group of women who decorated
7373 horse-drawn carriages for a parade in front of the Alamo and
7474 battled with flower blossoms instead of bullets to honor the
7575 heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto; and
7676 WHEREAS, A city of great historical, cultural, and
7777 economic importance, San Antonio is one of the treasures of the
7878 Lone Star State, and its citizens may indeed take great pride in
7979 the place they call home; now, therefore, be it
8080 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
8181 Legislature, hereby recognize February 28, 2023, as VIVA San
8282 Antonio Day at the State Capitol and extend to the city's
8383 residents sincere best wishes for the future.
