11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 246
22 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Galveston County are gathering
33 in Austin on March 1, 2023, to celebrate Galveston County Day at
44 the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Covering approximately 870 square miles of lush
66 grasslands, warm beaches, and sparkling waters, Galveston County
77 was first inhabited by the Karankawa people and later, several
88 Spanish expeditions passed through the area; the county was
99 formed out of portions of Harrisburg, Liberty, and Brazoria
1010 Counties in 1838 and named after Bernardo de Gálvez, who
1111 supported the United States in the Revolutionary War; and
1212 WHEREAS, Galveston, the county's seat, is the birthplace of
1313 the national holiday Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 that
1414 Union Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3,
1515 announcing the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved Black people
1616 in the state; by the late 1800s, the city had become a center for
1717 banking and a national hub for immigration, however during the
1818 Galveston hurricane of 1900, the deadliest natural disaster in
1919 U.S. history, the town was devastated and thousands of lives were
2020 lost; in the wake of the storm, the Galveston seawall was
2121 constructed; and
2222 WHEREAS, The ports of Galveston and Texas City contributed
2323 greatly to the rebuilding of the area after the hurricane, and
2424 along with the chemical and petrochemical complex, continue to be
2525 important to the economic development of the county;
2626 additionally, agriculture, livestock, and the fishing and
2727 shrimping industries provide jobs for many residents of the
2828 region; and
2929 WHEREAS, Today, Galveston County is a center for medical
3030 services and marine research and is home to a number of
3131 institutions of higher education; these include The University
3232 of Texas Medical Branch, which encompasses schools of medicine,
3333 nursing, health professions, public and population health, and
3434 graduate biomedical sciences, and Texas A&M University at
3535 Galveston, which is one of six state maritime academies in the
3636 nation, as well as College of the Mainland and Galveston College;
3737 and
3838 WHEREAS, Visitors are drawn to the county's natural beauty
3939 and miles of beaches and also enjoy such family-friendly
4040 attractions as the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo, the Galveston
4141 Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival, and the Blessing of the Fleet
4242 at Kemah; other points of interest include the Strand Historic
4343 District, Schlitterbahn Waterpark, the Galveston Island Historic
4444 Pleasure Pier, Lone Star Flight Museum, and Moody Gardens; and
4545 WHEREAS, Galveston County is blessed with a rich history
4646 and abundant natural resources, and its citizens may take great
4747 pride in their continuing contributions to the story of the Lone
4848 Star State; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
5050 Legislature, hereby recognize March 1, 2023, as Galveston County
5151 Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
5252 delegation.
