2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Galveston County are gathering |
---|
3 | 3 | | in Austin on March 1, 2023, to celebrate Galveston County Day at |
---|
4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Covering approximately 870 square miles of lush |
---|
6 | 6 | | grasslands, warm beaches, and sparkling waters, Galveston County |
---|
7 | 7 | | was first inhabited by the Karankawa people and later, several |
---|
8 | 8 | | Spanish expeditions passed through the area; the county was |
---|
9 | 9 | | formed out of portions of Harrisburg, Liberty, and Brazoria |
---|
10 | 10 | | Counties in 1838 and named after Bernardo de Gálvez, who |
---|
11 | 11 | | supported the United States in the Revolutionary War; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Galveston, the county's seat, is the birthplace of |
---|
13 | 13 | | the national holiday Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 that |
---|
14 | 14 | | Union Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, |
---|
15 | 15 | | announcing the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved Black people |
---|
16 | 16 | | in the state; by the late 1800s, the city had become a center for |
---|
17 | 17 | | banking and a national hub for immigration, however during the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Galveston hurricane of 1900, the deadliest natural disaster in |
---|
19 | 19 | | U.S. history, the town was devastated and thousands of lives were |
---|
20 | 20 | | lost; in the wake of the storm, the Galveston seawall was |
---|
21 | 21 | | constructed; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The ports of Galveston and Texas City contributed |
---|
23 | 23 | | greatly to the rebuilding of the area after the hurricane, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | along with the chemical and petrochemical complex, continue to be |
---|
25 | 25 | | important to the economic development of the county; |
---|
26 | 26 | | additionally, agriculture, livestock, and the fishing and |
---|
27 | 27 | | shrimping industries provide jobs for many residents of the |
---|
28 | 28 | | region; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Today, Galveston County is a center for medical |
---|
30 | 30 | | services and marine research and is home to a number of |
---|
31 | 31 | | institutions of higher education; these include The University |
---|
32 | 32 | | of Texas Medical Branch, which encompasses schools of medicine, |
---|
33 | 33 | | nursing, health professions, public and population health, and |
---|
34 | 34 | | graduate biomedical sciences, and Texas A&M University at |
---|
35 | 35 | | Galveston, which is one of six state maritime academies in the |
---|
36 | 36 | | nation, as well as College of the Mainland and Galveston College; |
---|
37 | 37 | | and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Visitors are drawn to the county's natural beauty |
---|
39 | 39 | | and miles of beaches and also enjoy such family-friendly |
---|
40 | 40 | | attractions as the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo, the Galveston |
---|
41 | 41 | | Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival, and the Blessing of the Fleet |
---|
42 | 42 | | at Kemah; other points of interest include the Strand Historic |
---|
43 | 43 | | District, Schlitterbahn Waterpark, the Galveston Island Historic |
---|
44 | 44 | | Pleasure Pier, Lone Star Flight Museum, and Moody Gardens; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Galveston County is blessed with a rich history |
---|
46 | 46 | | and abundant natural resources, and its citizens may take great |
---|
47 | 47 | | pride in their continuing contributions to the story of the Lone |
---|
48 | 48 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
50 | 50 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 1, 2023, as Galveston County |
---|
51 | 51 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
52 | 52 | | delegation. |
