5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
26 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
37 recognize best-selling author and decorated National Football
48 League coach Tony Dungy, who led the Indianapolis Colts to
59 victory in Super Bowl XLI; and
610 WHEREAS, Anthony Kevin Dungy was born on October 6, 1955,
711 in Jackson, Michigan; he graduated from Parkside High School in
812 1973 and attended the University of Minnesota, where he played as
913 the quarterback of the football team and was selected as the
1014 team's most valuable player in 1975 and 1976; the following year,
1115 Tony was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor for demonstrating
1216 extraordinary athleticism and academic excellence; and
1317 WHEREAS, Tony began his career as a professional football
1418 player when he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free
1519 agent; after playing in the National Football League for three
1620 seasons and winning a championship ring in 1978 with the Steelers
1721 in Super Bowl XIII, Tony began his coaching career in assistant
1822 coaching positions with the Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, and
1923 Minnesota Vikings; and
2024 WHEREAS, The youngest assistant coach and coordinator in
2125 league history, Tony soon gained a reputation for transforming
2226 losing teams into competitive teams; his vision and
2327 understanding of defensive strategy paved the way to his success
2428 as a head coach; it led to him being the first NFL head coach to
2529 defeat all 32 NFL teams and to becoming the most successful head
2630 coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the franchise's history; and
2731 WHEREAS, Tony continued making football history when he
2832 led the Indianapolis Colts to Super Bowl victory on February 4,
2933 2007, the first African American head coach to lead a team to
3034 Super Bowl glory; Tony also became the first head coach whose
3135 teams made the playoffs for 10 consecutive years, and he was
3236 inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016; he retired
3337 from coaching in 2009 and now serves as a sports analyst; and
3438 WHEREAS, In addition to his remarkable achievements in the
3539 domain of sports, Tony is a New York Times best-selling author
3640 whose books include Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices,
3741 and Priorities of a Winning Life; Uncommon: Finding Your Path to
3842 Significance; and The Mentor Leader; in 2007, President George W.
3943 Bush appointed Tony to the President's Council on Service and
4044 Civic Participation, and in 2009, President Barack Obama invited
4145 him to join the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighboring
4246 Partnerships; and
4347 WHEREAS, A devoted Christian with a generous spirit, Tony
4448 has selflessly given of his time and talents to benefit numerous
4549 worthy organizations and serves as national spokesman for All Pro
4650 Dad, the fatherhood program of Family First; he and his wife,
4751 Lauren, are loving parents to their children, whom they have
4852 taught to face the challenges of life with courage and strength;
4953 now, therefore, be it
5054 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
5155 Legislature, hereby commend Coach Tony Dungy on his many
5256 outstanding achievements and positive contributions to the Lone
5357 Star State and to the sport of football and extend to him best
5458 wishes in all his future endeavors; and, be it further
5559 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5660 him as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate.
