2	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	7		recognize best-selling author and decorated National Football
4	8		League coach Tony Dungy, who led the Indianapolis Colts to
5	9		victory in Super Bowl XLI; and
6	10		WHEREAS, Anthony Kevin Dungy was born on October 6, 1955,
7	11		in Jackson, Michigan; he graduated from Parkside High School in
8	12		1973 and attended the University of Minnesota, where he played as
9	13		the quarterback of the football team and was selected as the
10	14		team's most valuable player in 1975 and 1976; the following year,
11	15		Tony was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor for demonstrating
12	16		extraordinary athleticism and academic excellence; and
13	17		WHEREAS, Tony began his career as a professional football
14	18		player when he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free
15	19		agent; after playing in the National Football League for three
16	20		seasons and winning a championship ring in 1978 with the Steelers
17	21		in Super Bowl XIII, Tony began his coaching career in assistant
18	22		coaching positions with the Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, and
19	23		Minnesota Vikings; and
20	24		WHEREAS, The youngest assistant coach and coordinator in
21	25		league history, Tony soon gained a reputation for transforming
22	26		losing teams into competitive teams; his vision and
23	27		understanding of defensive strategy paved the way to his success
24	28		as a head coach; it led to him being the first NFL head coach to
25	29		defeat all 32 NFL teams and to becoming the most successful head
26	30		coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the franchise's history; and
27	31		WHEREAS, Tony continued making football history when he
28	32		led the Indianapolis Colts to Super Bowl victory on February 4,
29	33		2007, the first African American head coach to lead a team to
30	34		Super Bowl glory; Tony also became the first head coach whose
31	35		teams made the playoffs for 10 consecutive years, and he was
32	36		inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016; he retired
33	37		from coaching in 2009 and now serves as a sports analyst; and
34	38		WHEREAS, In addition to his remarkable achievements in the
35	39		domain of sports, Tony is a New York Times best-selling author
36	40		whose books include Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices,
37	41		and Priorities of a Winning Life; Uncommon: Finding Your Path to
38	42		Significance; and The Mentor Leader; in 2007, President George W.
39	43		Bush appointed Tony to the President's Council on Service and
40	44		Civic Participation, and in 2009, President Barack Obama invited
41	45		him to join the Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighboring
42	46		Partnerships; and
43	47		WHEREAS, A devoted Christian with a generous spirit, Tony
44	48		has selflessly given of his time and talents to benefit numerous
45	49		worthy organizations and serves as national spokesman for All Pro
46	50		Dad, the fatherhood program of Family First; he and his wife,
47	51		Lauren, are loving parents to their children, whom they have
48	52		taught to face the challenges of life with courage and strength;
49	53		now, therefore, be it
50	54		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
51	55		Legislature, hereby commend Coach Tony Dungy on his many
52	56		outstanding achievements and positive contributions to the Lone
53	57		Star State and to the sport of football and extend to him best
54	58		wishes in all his future endeavors; and, be it further
55	59		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
56	60		him as an expression of high esteem from the Texas Senate.
