3 | 3 | | crops in Texas for a century and a half, and in 1997, the 75th |

4 | 4 | | Legislature named it the official fiber and fabric of the Lone |

5 | 5 | | Star State; and |

6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Introduced to Texas by Spanish missionaries, |
---|
7 | 7 | | cotton soared in production between 1850 and 1900, when it |
---|
8 | 8 | | reached more than 3.4 million bales; contributing to the |
---|
9 | 9 | | expansion were the opening of new lands for cultivation, the |
---|
10 | 10 | | extension of the railroad, and the influx of thousands of |
---|
11 | 11 | | immigrants from the Deep South and from Europe; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The State of Texas has been the home of a number of |
---|
13 | 13 | | major innovations in the cotton industry; Robert S. Munger |
---|
14 | 14 | | developed an automated system ginning process in Mexia in 1884, |
---|
15 | 15 | | and in 1980 the country's first high-volume instrument |
---|
16 | 16 | | cotton-classing office opened in Lamesa; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In recent years, approximately 40 percent of all |
---|
18 | 18 | | the cotton harvested in the United States has been grown in |
---|
19 | 19 | | Texas, and the state usually ranks first among all the states in |
---|
20 | 20 | | cotton production; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Our farmers work long hours to provide food and |
---|
22 | 22 | | fiber for the world and their work is seldom recognized; the |
---|
23 | 23 | | profession is both tiresome and stressful but rewarding at the |
---|
24 | 24 | | same time; let us take a moment to recognize our farmers for the |
---|
25 | 25 | | work they put in every day that benefits all of us; thank God for |
---|
26 | 26 | | our farmers and ranchers!; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The history of Texas cannot be told without taking |
---|
28 | 28 | | into account the enormous role that cotton has played in the |
---|
29 | 29 | | development of the state, and the crop continues to provide the |
---|
30 | 30 | | livelihood of thousands of Texans; now, therefore, be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as Cotton Day at the |
---|
33 | 33 | | State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best |
---|
34 | 34 | | wishes for an enjoyable and memorable stay in Austin. |
