1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 275
2	2	WHEREAS, University of Houston-Clear Lake Day is being
3	3	celebrated at the State Capitol on March 7, 2023, and this
4	4	occasion provides a fitting opportunity to pay tribute to all
5	5	those associated with this notable institution; and
6	6	WHEREAS, UHCL traces its beginning to 1971, when the 62nd
7	7	Texas Legislature authorized the creation of a University of
8	8	Houston campus to serve the Clear Lake area; in 1974,
9	9	construction began on the Bayou Building while more than 1,000
10	10	students and 60 faculty members began holding classes at an
11	11	off-site location; the institution's educational mission has
12	12	continued to expand through the years; in 2006, UHCL began
13	13	offering the joint master of healthcare administration/master of
14	14	business administration degree program at the Texas Medical
15	15	Center, and in 2010, the Pearland Campus was opened; UHCL
16	16	welcomed its first freshman and sophomore students to campus in
17	17	2014; and
18	18	WHEREAS, A four-year university, UHCL enrolls more than
19	19	8,500 students annually and offers over 70 undergraduate and 50
20	20	graduate degrees in its Colleges of Business, Education, Human
21	21	Sciences and Humanities, and Science and Engineering; since
22	22	2007, the university has initiated doctoral programs in
23	23	educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, and health
24	24	service psychology; the school's 75,000 alumni include more than
25	25	400 CEOs and 10 astronauts, as well as individuals who have
26	26	distinguished themselves in the fields of education,
27	27	broadcasting, fiction writing, and a vast range of other
28	28	endeavors; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Reflecting its commitment to community service,
30	30	UHCL is home to many specialized centers and institutes,
31	31	including the Health and Human Performance Institute, the
32	32	Environmental Institute of Houston, the Diplomacy Institute,
33	33	the Institute for Human and Planetary Sustainability, and the
34	34	Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities; the
35	35	university has been cited five times on the President's Higher
36	36	Education Community Service Honor Roll for its exemplary civic
37	37	engagement; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the University of
39	39	Houston-Clear Lake has fostered a diverse and inclusive campus
40	40	environment while providing students with a strong foundation
41	41	for success, and in so doing, it has become a cornerstone
42	42	educational institution in the Lone Star State; now,
43	43	therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
45	45	Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as University of
46	46	Houston-Clear Lake Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm
47	47	welcome to the school's visiting delegation.
