2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Wise County are visiting Austin on |

3 | 3 | | March 7, 2023, to celebrate Wise County Day at the State |
---|
4 | 4 | | Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in the northwestern part of the state, |
---|
6 | 6 | | Wise County was established on January 23, 1856; the county was |
---|
7 | 7 | | carved out of Cooke County by legislative act and named in honor |
---|
8 | 8 | | of Henry A. Wise, a U.S. congressman from Virginia who had |
---|
9 | 9 | | supported the annexation of Texas; at the same time as it created |
---|
10 | 10 | | Wise County, the legislature decreed that its county seat be |
---|
11 | 11 | | established within five miles of the county's center, and two |
---|
12 | 12 | | years later that new community became known as Decatur, after the |
---|
13 | 13 | | naval hero Stephen Decatur; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The eastern fork of the Chisholm Trail passed near |
---|
15 | 15 | | Decatur during the latter half of the 19th century, and the town |
---|
16 | 16 | | prospered as a shipping point and market for local farmers; |
---|
17 | 17 | | today, it is a center for natural gas production, specialty |
---|
18 | 18 | | carbon and graphite manufacturing, and health care, as well as |
---|
19 | 19 | | marketing and processing for area agribusiness; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Decatur is also home to some of the best |
---|
21 | 21 | | professional rodeo cowboys and bull riders in the world; the many |
---|
22 | 22 | | champions who have lived or trained in the community include one |
---|
23 | 23 | | of the most decorated rodeo cowboys of all time, Trevor Brazile, |
---|
24 | 24 | | as well as Tuf Cooper and Texas Rodeo Hall of Famer Roy Cooper, |
---|
25 | 25 | | both of the famed Cooper family; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Visitors to Wise County are drawn by such historic |
---|
27 | 27 | | attractions as the Waggoner Mansion, the Wise County Heritage |
---|
28 | 28 | | Museum, the Wise County Veterans Park, and the pink granite Wise |
---|
29 | 29 | | County Courthouse, which was completed in 1896; the county also |
---|
30 | 30 | | offers a variety of recreational opportunities at Lake |
---|
31 | 31 | | Bridgeport, Eagle Mountain Lake, and the Caddo-Lyndon B. Johnson |
---|
32 | 32 | | National Grasslands; in addition, area residents commemorate |
---|
33 | 33 | | their heritage with the annual Butterfield Stage Days Festival in |
---|
34 | 34 | | May, the Wise County Old Settlers Reunion in July, and the |
---|
35 | 35 | | Chisholm Trail Days and Western Heritage Festival in August; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their history as they embrace the |
---|
37 | 37 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Wise County take |
---|
38 | 38 | | great pride in their community, and it is indeed fitting to honor |
---|
39 | 39 | | their unique contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; |
---|
40 | 40 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as Wise County Day |
---|
43 | 43 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
44 | 44 | | delegation. |
