4 | 4 | | Kappa Alpha Day at the State Capitol; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The nation's first Greek sorority for African |

6 | 6 | | American women, Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded as a social and |

7 | 7 | | service organization on January 15, 1908, by Howard University |
---|
8 | 8 | | undergraduate Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and 19 other students; these |
---|
9 | 9 | | inspiring women are today known as "the Twenty Pearls"; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The sorority seeks to cultivate and encourage |
---|
11 | 11 | | high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and |
---|
12 | 12 | | friendship among college women, to improve the social stature |
---|
13 | 13 | | of women of all ages, and to be of service to all mankind; a |
---|
14 | 14 | | member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Alpha Kappa Alpha |
---|
15 | 15 | | serves people around the world through the efforts of more than |
---|
16 | 16 | | 355,000 members in over 1,000 chapters located in the United |
---|
17 | 17 | | States, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, |

18 | 18 | | Germany, South Korea, Japan, Dubai, Liberia, Nigeria, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | South Africa; and |

20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, For more than a century, the group has made a |

21 | 21 | | positive difference with its important work in the areas of civil |

22 | 22 | | rights, education, economic empowerment, and health care; under |

23 | 23 | | the leadership of the sorority's 31st international president, |

24 | 24 | | Danette Anthony Reed, Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to focus on the |

25 | 25 | | personal and professional development of its members, on the |
---|
26 | 26 | | bonds of sisterhood, and on its domestic and international |
---|
27 | 27 | | servant leadership; and |

28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha has long remained at the |

30 | 30 | | members' efforts have made an important contribution to the goals |
