2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Many proud Texans are visiting Austin on |

3 | 3 | | March 7, 2023, to celebrate Texas Southern University Day at the |
---|
4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, One of the nation's preeminent historically Black |
---|
6 | 6 | | colleges and universities, TSU was founded in 1927; it was |
---|
7 | 7 | | designated as a special-purpose institution of higher education |
---|
8 | 8 | | for urban programming by the Texas Legislature in 1973 and |
---|
9 | 9 | | retains a steadfast commitment to innovative approaches that |
---|
10 | 10 | | respond to the metropolitan environment; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The university now serves approximately 7,500 |
---|
12 | 12 | | undergraduate and graduate students from around the world; it |
---|
13 | 13 | | offers well over 100 baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral |
---|
14 | 14 | | degree programs in numerous schools, including the Barbara |
---|
15 | 15 | | Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, named after two |
---|
16 | 16 | | alumni who served with distinction in the United States |
---|
17 | 17 | | Congress; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, TSU is noted for its Thurgood Marshall School of |
---|
19 | 19 | | Law and its College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; the |
---|
20 | 20 | | university is also active in the Texas Legislative Internship |
---|
21 | 21 | | Program, which grants students the opportunity to gain valuable |
---|
22 | 22 | | experience in state government, alongside many legislators who |
---|
23 | 23 | | share personal ties to their alma mater; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Under the leadership of its 13th president, |
---|
25 | 25 | | Dr. Lesia L. Crumpton-Young, TSU has redoubled its efforts to |
---|
26 | 26 | | increase student success rates and academic rigor while |
---|
27 | 27 | | expanding its research programs, enhancing its culture, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | developing stronger relationships with Houston public schools, |
---|
29 | 29 | | local community colleges, alumni, and other stakeholders; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, For nearly a century, Texas Southern University |
---|
31 | 31 | | has played an important role in higher education in the Lone Star |
---|
32 | 32 | | State, and its graduates continue to achieve success and make |
---|
33 | 33 | | significant contributions in numerous fields of endeavor; now, |
---|
34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |

35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as Texas Southern |
---|
37 | 37 | | University Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those |
---|
38 | 38 | | associated with the institution sincere best wishes for the |
---|
39 | 39 | | future; and, be it further |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
