2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join alumni and representatives from the University of
4	4	Houston-Victoria in celebrating University of Houston-Victoria
5	5	Day at the State Capitol on March 7, 2023; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Established in 1973, the University of
7	7	Houston-Victoria boasts more than 22,000 alumni, including
8	8	acclaimed author and artist Van G. Garrett; the university is
9	9	meeting higher education needs in a city that is home to more than
10	10	65,000 people and that serves as a regional hub for the
11	11	seven-county area known as the Golden Crescent; and
12	12	WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Victoria educates
13	13	approximately 4,000 students annually and graduates about 1,000
14	14	each year; the university offers more than 80 bachelor's and
15	15	master's degree programs, with concentrations in the fields of
16	16	business, education and health professions, liberal arts and
17	17	social sciences, and natural and applied sciences; it was the
18	18	first public university in Texas to offer an accelerated
19	19	bachelor's degree program, and it offers some of the lowest
20	20	tuition and fees in Texas; and
21	21	WHEREAS, The only accredited four-year university in the
22	22	city of Victoria, the University of Houston-Victoria is home to
23	23	impressive athletic teams competing in baseball, softball, and
24	24	men's and women's golf and soccer in the National Association of
25	25	Intercollegiate Athletics' Red River Conference; and
26	26	WHEREAS, Under the leadership of President Robert K.
27	27	Glenn, the university has continued to grow as a diverse
28	28	institution, with the student body currently representing 38
29	29	states and 200 countries; moreover, the school has been
30	30	recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and a
31	31	Military-Friendly campus; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Throughout its 50-year history, the University of
33	33	Houston-Victoria has offered its students outstanding
34	34	educational opportunities that provide them with the basis for
35	35	productive and satisfying careers and that promote their
36	36	financial well-being; the university has advanced the quality of
37	37	life in the community through excellence in teaching, research,
38	38	and service, and it is truly fitting that the university receive
39	39	special recognition for its contributions to the growth and
40	40	vitality of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
42	42	Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as University of
43	43	Houston-Victoria Day at the State Capitol and extend to the
44	44	visiting delegation sincere best wishes for an informative and
45	45	enjoyable stay in Austin; and, be it further
46	46	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
47	47	the university as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
