11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 286
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 celebrate March 7, 2023, as Texas Bays and Estuaries Day at the
44 State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Home to almost seven million people and
66 comprising 18 counties, the Texas coast is treasured by
77 countless Texans; the coastline spans over 3,000 miles of bay
88 shorelines and includes coastal prairies, saltmarsh wetlands,
99 beaches, dunes, estuaries, and other ecosystems that are
1010 crucial to the physical, recreational, and economic landscape
1111 of the Lone Star State; and
1212 WHEREAS, The eight major bay systems in Texas, which are
1313 Sabine Lake, Galveston Bay, Matagorda Bay, San Antonio Bay,
1414 Aransas Bay, Corpus Christi Bay, Upper Laguna Madre, and Lower
1515 Laguna Madre, connect inflows from inland streams and rivers with
1616 oceanic tidal waters from the Gulf of Mexico, creating estuaries
1717 made of freshwater mixed with saltwater; and
1818 WHEREAS, The state's bays and estuaries are home to
1919 numerous species of fish and other wildlife, and those waters act
2020 as safe havens for endangered species and habitats under the
2121 Coastal Zone Management Act; noted for its picturesque beauty,
2222 the coast's diverse natural environments provide outstanding
2323 opportunities for nature enthusiasts and preservationists from
2424 all over the world; and
2525 WHEREAS, Ranching, farming, fishing, and petroleum remain
2626 important economic resources on the Texas coast; the bays and
2727 estuaries help sustain waterborne commerce, energy and chemical
2828 industries, military operations, commercial fishing, and
2929 recreational activities and tourism, all of which contribute
3030 significantly to the economy of the State of Texas; and
3131 WHEREAS, The bays and estuaries of the Texas coastline
3232 offer tremendous resources for the well-being and health of the
3333 state's citizens and wildlife; the ecosystems protect
3434 communities on the coast from storms and floods, provide
3535 shoreline stabilization and erosion prevention, present
3636 countless opportunities for economic growth, and offer priceless
3737 scenic beauty for every Texan to enjoy; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3939 Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as Texas Bays and
4040 Estuaries Day and commend all who work to protect and preserve
4141 the bays and estuaries of the Texas coast; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
4343 honor of this special occasion.
