3 | 3 | | celebrate March 7, 2023, as Texas Bays and Estuaries Day at the |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Home to almost seven million people and |
---|
6 | 6 | | comprising 18 counties, the Texas coast is treasured by |
---|
7 | 7 | | countless Texans; the coastline spans over 3,000 miles of bay |
---|
8 | 8 | | shorelines and includes coastal prairies, saltmarsh wetlands, |
---|
9 | 9 | | beaches, dunes, estuaries, and other ecosystems that are |
---|
10 | 10 | | crucial to the physical, recreational, and economic landscape |
---|
11 | 11 | | of the Lone Star State; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The eight major bay systems in Texas, which are |
---|
13 | 13 | | Sabine Lake, Galveston Bay, Matagorda Bay, San Antonio Bay, |
---|
14 | 14 | | Aransas Bay, Corpus Christi Bay, Upper Laguna Madre, and Lower |
---|
15 | 15 | | Laguna Madre, connect inflows from inland streams and rivers with |
---|
16 | 16 | | oceanic tidal waters from the Gulf of Mexico, creating estuaries |
---|
17 | 17 | | made of freshwater mixed with saltwater; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The state's bays and estuaries are home to |
---|
19 | 19 | | numerous species of fish and other wildlife, and those waters act |
---|
20 | 20 | | as safe havens for endangered species and habitats under the |
---|
21 | 21 | | Coastal Zone Management Act; noted for its picturesque beauty, |
---|
22 | 22 | | the coast's diverse natural environments provide outstanding |
---|
23 | 23 | | opportunities for nature enthusiasts and preservationists from |
---|
24 | 24 | | all over the world; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Ranching, farming, fishing, and petroleum remain |
---|
26 | 26 | | important economic resources on the Texas coast; the bays and |
---|
27 | 27 | | estuaries help sustain waterborne commerce, energy and chemical |
---|
28 | 28 | | industries, military operations, commercial fishing, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | recreational activities and tourism, all of which contribute |
---|
30 | 30 | | significantly to the economy of the State of Texas; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, The bays and estuaries of the Texas coastline |
---|
32 | 32 | | offer tremendous resources for the well-being and health of the |
---|
33 | 33 | | state's citizens and wildlife; the ecosystems protect |
---|
34 | 34 | | communities on the coast from storms and floods, provide |
---|
35 | 35 | | shoreline stabilization and erosion prevention, present |
---|
36 | 36 | | countless opportunities for economic growth, and offer priceless |
---|
37 | 37 | | scenic beauty for every Texan to enjoy; now, therefore, be it |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 7, 2023, as Texas Bays and |
---|
40 | 40 | | Estuaries Day and commend all who work to protect and preserve |

41 | 41 | | the bays and estuaries of the Texas coast; and, be it further |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
