3 | 3 | | Day at the State Capitol on March 8, 2023, provides a fitting |

4 | 4 | | opportunity to recognize this notable institution; and |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1974, the University of |
---|
6 | 6 | | Houston-Downtown has built a reputation as an inclusive, |
---|
7 | 7 | | equitable, and welcoming campus; with an accessible location at |
---|
8 | 8 | | the heart of downtown Houston, it serves a student body highly |
---|
9 | 9 | | representative of the vibrant community; many of the more than |
---|
10 | 10 | | 14,000 Texans enrolled are transfer students or older adults |
---|
11 | 11 | | returning to complete degrees; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The Wall Street Journal has named UHD the most |
---|
13 | 13 | | diverse school in the South; seventy percent of freshmen are |
---|
14 | 14 | | first-generation college students, and the university is federally |
---|
15 | 15 | | designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, a Minority-Serving |
---|
16 | 16 | | Institution, and a Military-Friendly School; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Led by its seventh president, Dr. Loren J. |
---|
18 | 18 | | Blanchard, UHD offers 57 undergraduate and graduate degrees, |
---|
19 | 19 | | with 19 opportunities for online degree completion; two of the |
---|
20 | 20 | | programs are ranked among the nation's best by U.S. News & World |
---|
21 | 21 | | Report; the institution is acknowledged under the Carnegie |
---|
22 | 22 | | Classification system as a comprehensive, regional university |
---|
23 | 23 | | and has four colleges, Humanities and Social Sciences, Public |
---|
24 | 24 | | Service, Sciences and Technology, and the Marilyn Davies College |
---|
25 | 25 | | of Business, which houses the largest MBA program in the area; |
---|
26 | 26 | | over the years, UHD has built strong business and industry |
---|
27 | 27 | | partnerships, and it is developing as an innovation hub for |

28 | 28 | | undergraduate researchers and entrepreneurs; and |

29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The university ranks as one of the most affordable |

30 | 30 | | institutions of higher learning in the state; while providing |

31 | 31 | | scholars with a strong academic foundation, it fosters timely |

32 | 32 | | progress through degree programs so that graduates may enter |

33 | 33 | | their chosen fields as swiftly as possible with low student debt; |

34 | 34 | | UHD is also committed to civic engagement and encourages a |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, For nearly a half century, the University of |
