11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 297
22 WHEREAS, The Honorable Lynn Ellison retired as judge of the
33 81st Judicial District Court on December 31, 2022, and his
44 exemplary tenure in that office marked a notable chapter in a
55 distinguished legal career spanning nearly five decades; and
66 WHEREAS, Lynn Ellison was first elected judge of the 81st
77 Judicial District Court in 2018, and after taking office in 2019,
88 he presided over numerous civil, criminal, family, probate, and
99 juvenile cases for the court, which serves Atascosa, Frio,
1010 Karnes, La Salle, and Wilson Counties; and
1111 WHEREAS, Judge Ellison earned his bachelor's degree from
1212 Tulane University and his law degree from The University of Texas
1313 at Austin School of Law; he began his career in 1974 as an
1414 assistant city attorney in Austin, and from 1975 to 1977, he was
1515 an assistant district attorney in Travis County; after a brief
1616 time in private practice, he served in a range of state
1717 positions, including as a committee counsel for the Texas House
1818 of Representatives, as a staff attorney for Texas MHMR, as
1919 general counsel for the office of the Speaker of the House, as a
2020 staff attorney for the Texas State Ethics Advisory Commission,
2121 and as a special assistant for the State Property Tax Board; and
2222 WHEREAS, In 1985, this respected attorney was hired by the
2323 81st Judicial District Court as an assistant district attorney,
2424 and he went on to be elected as the D.A., holding that office from
2525 1993 to 2004; following nine years as an assistant attorney
2626 general, he was appointed in 2013 as judge of the Atascosa County
2727 Court at Law, where he served until his election as district
2828 court judge; and
2929 WHEREAS, Judge Ellison has contributed to his professional
3030 community as a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Atascosa
3131 County Bar Association, and the Texas District and County
3232 Attorneys Association, and he has served on the Special
3333 Prosecution Unit Board; furthermore, he has given generously of
3434 his time to numerous other organizations, including the Atascosa
3535 County Child Welfare Board and the Atascosa County Law
3636 Enforcement Officers Association; in all his endeavors, he
3737 enjoys the love and support of his wife of 42 years, Janet, his
3838 daughters, Rachel and Gretchen, and his grandchildren; and
3939 WHEREAS, Lynn Ellison's dedication, expertise, and
4040 commitment to justice have greatly benefited citizens across the
4141 Lone Star State, and he may indeed reflect with pride on his many
4242 achievements; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4444 Legislature, hereby congratulate Judge Lynn Ellison on his
4545 retirement from the 81st Judicial District Court and extend to
4646 him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4848 prepared for Judge Ellison as an expression of high regard from
4949 the Texas Senate.
