3 | 3 | | Austin on March 1, 2023, to celebrate Uvalde County Day at the |

4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Permanent settlers began to arrive in the region |
---|
6 | 6 | | in the 1850s, and Uvalde County was established in 1856; a |
---|
7 | 7 | | rough-and-tumble frontier area during and after the Civil War, |
---|
8 | 8 | | the county became a ranching center in the late 1800s and was also |
---|
9 | 9 | | renowned for its honey, which took first prize at the Paris |
---|
10 | 10 | | World's Fair in 1900; today, the county's economy continues to be |
---|
11 | 11 | | based on agribusiness, including farming and the raising of |
---|
12 | 12 | | livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Four spring-fed rivers, the Nueces, Leona, |
---|
14 | 14 | | Sabinal, and Frio, have cut ruggedly beautiful canyons through |
---|
15 | 15 | | the region's rolling hills, and the county draws hunters from |
---|
16 | 16 | | around the state with its abundance of deer, quail, doves, and |
---|
17 | 17 | | turkeys; additionally, swimmers, campers, bird-watchers, and |
---|
18 | 18 | | other outdoor enthusiasts may enjoy the activities of the scenic |
---|
19 | 19 | | Garner State Park and Cooks Slough Sanctuary and Nature Park; and |

20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Founded more than 150 years ago, the city of |

21 | 21 | | Uvalde is the county seat and is home to a number of attractions; |

22 | 22 | | John Nance "Cactus Jack" Garner, the 32nd vice president of the |
---|
23 | 23 | | United States, lived and practiced law there; former Texas |
---|
24 | 24 | | governor Dolph Briscoe Jr. was born and raised in the city and |
---|
25 | 25 | | returned to it following the completion of his terms in office; |
---|
26 | 26 | | the Briscoe Art and Antique Collection displays works collected |
---|
27 | 27 | | by Governor Briscoe and his wife; in addition, the town hosts |
---|
28 | 28 | | presentations by the Sahawe Indian Dancers, who help preserve the |

29 | 29 | | Native American cultural practices of the Southwest with their |

31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Other communities in the county include Knippa, |

32 | 32 | | Cline, Montell, Utopia, Concan, Reagan Wells, and Sabinal, which |

34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of this notable county are working to |
