1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 308
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize the citizens of Hill County who are visiting Austin on
4	4	March 16, 2023, to celebrate Hill County Day at the State Capitol
5	5	and to pay tribute to this notable Texas county; and
6	6	WHEREAS, On February 7, 1853, the state legislature
7	7	created Hill County from the western portion of Navarro County;
8	8	it was named for Dr. George Washington Hill, the secretary of war
9	9	for the Republic of Texas under President Sam Houston; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Hill County was organized on May 14, 1853, at
11	11	Lexington on Jack's Branch; since then, it has grown and now has a
12	12	population of 36,000 residents while maintaining its rural charm
13	13	and friendliness; the restored courthouse in Hillsboro serves as
14	14	a hub for all county business, and Hill College provides
15	15	educational and cultural resources for area residents; the
16	16	campus houses the Texas Heritage Museum, which includes a
17	17	10,000-volume library of materials on the Civil War and the
18	18	official Texas Medal of Honor memorial to native Texans; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Each year the communities of Hill County host such
20	20	events as the Hill County Fair, Autumnfest, the Cinco de Mayo
21	21	Celebration, Pioneer Days, and Hubbard City Trade Days and
22	22	Festivities; these events showcase the county's hospitality,
23	23	agricultural roots, scenic beauty, and heritage-tourism
24	24	attractions; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Recreational opportunities offered by Lake
26	26	Whitney State Park make it a popular destination, and visitors
27	27	enjoy such activities as camping, hiking, boating, and
28	28	bird-watching; astronomy enthusiasts will be pleased to know
29	29	that, according to Astronomy magazine, Hillsboro will be the
30	30	seventh-best place in the world to view the solar eclipse in
31	31	April of 2024; among the many esteemed Texans who hail from the
32	32	county is the legendary singer and songwriter Willie Nelson,
33	33	whose birthplace is the Hill County community of Abbott; and
34	34	WHEREAS, Those who call Hill County home take justifiable
35	35	pride in their county's heritage and distinctive character and in
36	36	the many attributes that make it an outstanding place in which to
37	37	live, work, and raise a family; the citizens of Hill County have
38	38	done much to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Texas,
39	39	and it is indeed fitting that the county and its residents
40	40	receive special recognition; now, therefore, be it
41	41	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
42	42	Legislature, hereby recognize March 16, 2023, as Hill County
43	43	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
44	44	sincere best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin; and, be it
45	45	further
46	46	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
47	47	honor of Hill County Day.
