2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize the Tenth Court of Appeals on the occasion of the |
---|
4 | 4 | | court's centennial; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, In 1923, the Texas Legislature created the Tenth |
---|
6 | 6 | | Supreme Judicial District to be composed of 12 counties: Bosque, |
---|
7 | 7 | | Brazos, Coryell, Falls, Freestone, Hamilton, Hill, Leon, |
---|
8 | 8 | | Limestone, Madison, McLennan, and Robertson; the legislature |
---|
9 | 9 | | added Johnson, Navarro, Somervell, and Hood Counties to the |
---|
10 | 10 | | district in 1927, removed Hood County in 1929, added Ellis County |
---|
11 | 11 | | in 1932, and added Burleson and Walker Counties in 2005; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The Court of Civil Appeals for the Tenth Supreme |
---|
13 | 13 | | Judicial District met for its first regular session on June 30, |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1923, at the McLennan County Courthouse in Waco; the City of Waco |
---|
15 | 15 | | contracted with McLennan County to furnish the fourth floor of |
---|
16 | 16 | | its courthouse to house the Court of Civil Appeals, and the Waco |
---|
17 | 17 | | Law Library Corporation donated its books to become the court's |
---|
18 | 18 | | library; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1981, all Texas courts of civil appeals were |
---|
20 | 20 | | granted appellate criminal jurisdiction in cases that did not |
---|
21 | 21 | | involve capital punishment and were renamed courts of appeals; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The title of Associate Justices was changed in |
---|
23 | 23 | | 1985 to Justices, and in 1987 the Texas Legislature replaced all |
---|
24 | 24 | | references to Supreme Judicial Districts with Courts of Appeals |
---|
25 | 25 | | Districts; in 1991, the Tenth Court of Appeals was granted the |
---|
26 | 26 | | authority to sit in any county within its district; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Since 1923, when Governor Pat Neff appointed |
---|
28 | 28 | | Jesse Gallagher as the court's first chief justice, until today, |
---|
29 | 29 | | under the guidance of Chief Justice Thomas W. Gray, Justices Matt |
---|
31 | 31 | | Court of Appeals has been dedicated to providing its district |
---|
32 | 32 | | with the protection of the law and the administration of justice; |
---|
33 | 33 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby commend the distinguished justices and staff |
---|
36 | 36 | | who have served on the Tenth Court of Appeals during its 100 years |
---|
37 | 37 | | of existence and recognize the court's many contributions to the |
---|
38 | 38 | | rich history of jurisprudence in the State of Texas; and, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | further |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

41 | 41 | | the Tenth Court of Appeals in honor of this special occasion. |
