| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, A delegation from Angelo State University is |

| 3 | 3 | | visiting Austin on March 21, 2023, in celebration of Angelo State |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | University Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Founded as San Angelo Junior College, ASU opened |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | its doors in 1928 with an initial enrollment of 112 students, and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | its first graduating class consisted of six students; in the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | 1930s, the school changed its name to San Angelo College, and it |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | evolved into a four-year, state-supported university during the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 1960s; the school adopted the name Angelo State College in 1965 |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and Angelo State University in 1969; it was part of the Texas |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | State University System from 1963 to 2007, when it joined the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Texas Tech University System; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Today, ASU serves more than 10,500 students and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | employs some 900 faculty and staff members, who benefit from the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | able leadership of President Ronnie D. Hawkins Jr.; it offers a |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs with more than |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 100 majors and concentrations, including an essential and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | rapidly expanding commercial aviation program, across its six |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | colleges, which encompass health and human services, arts and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | humanities, education, science and engineering, business, and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | graduate studies and research; in addition, the school |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | established the ASU Distinguished Scholarship Program, which is |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | funded by one of the largest endowments at a U.S. regional |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | university; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Among its many achievements, ASU has been ranked |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | as one of the nation's best colleges by The Princeton Review |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | every year since 2010; it has also been named a Hispanic-Serving |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Institution by the U.S. Department of Education and a Military |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Friendly School by G.I.Jobs magazine; ASU has more than 49,000 |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | alumni around the globe; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, For almost nine and a half decades, Angelo State |

| 33 | 33 | | University has played an important role in higher education in |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the Lone Star State, and its graduates continue to achieve |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | success and make significant contributions in numerous fields of |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | endeavor; now, therefore, be it |

| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 21, 2023, as Angelo State |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | University Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to |

| 40 | 40 | | the school's visiting delegation. |
