| 3 | 3 | | Austin on March 22, 2023, to celebrate Denton County Day at the |

| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in North Texas and serving as the gateway |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Denton County was created from the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Peters colony grant by the Texas Legislature in 1846 and named |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | for pioneer, preacher, lawyer, and soldier John Bunyan Denton; |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the early years of the county saw its emergence as an |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | agricultural center, and the arrival of the railroads in the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 1880s ensured that the region's wheat and cotton would find |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | distribution across the country; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The county has experienced remarkable growth in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | recent years, and with a population of about 980,000, Denton is |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | one of the fastest growing counties in the nation; it has drawn a |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | number of corporate residents as well, including Federal |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Express, Sally Beauty Holdings, Target, WinCo, Safran, and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Peterbilt Motors; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The City of Denton, the county seat, is home to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University, which |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | were founded as Texas Normal College and Girls' Industrial |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | College in 1890 and 1903, respectively; nearby Corinth hosts a |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | campus of North Central Texas College, which offers technical and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | occupational classes to residents throughout the county and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | beyond, and the area is further served by 11 public school |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | districts educating thousands of young Texans at nearly 100 |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | facilities; and |

| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Other attractions in the area include the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | wilderness of the North Texas Greenbelt and the architecture of |

| 30 | 30 | | the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square; moreover, the county |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | is part of the North Texas Horse Country, which is one of the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | largest regions for horse breeding and training in the |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | southwestern United States, and the county also boasts the |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | second-largest sports facility in the nation, the Texas Motor |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Speedway, which draws hundreds of thousands of race fans each |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | year; and |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of this notable North Texas county |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | are working to preserve the best of their past even as they look |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | forward to a bright and promising future, and they are sure to |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | figure prominently in the story of the Lone Star State in the |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | years ahead; now, therefore, be it |

| 42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |

| 43 | 43 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 22, 2023, as Denton County Day |
