| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Buda are gathering |

| 3 | 3 | | in Austin on March 22, 2023, to celebrate Buda Day at the State |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Capitol with representatives from the City of Buda, the Buda |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Economic Development Corporation, the Buda Chamber of Commerce, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | and other community businesses and organizations; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1881 along the route of the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | International-Great Northern Railroad, the town of Buda was |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | initially known as Du Pre before being renamed at the request of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | postal officials seven years later; one possible source of the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | town's new name is thought to be the Spanish word viuda, meaning |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | widow, in reference to the widows who served as cooks at the local |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Carrington Hotel in the 1880s; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Buda's early economy centered on supplies and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | services provided to the nearby ranches and dairy farms, and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | owners of local businesses joined to form a chamber of commerce |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | in 1928; Buda was incorporated two decades later, and in 1967, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the town became a part of the Hays Consolidated Independent |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | School District; Buda's population began to grow in earnest in |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the 1980s, and today the city is home to more than 17,000 |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | residents; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Buda's natural beauty at the edge of the Texas |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Hill Country and the community's dedication to preserving the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | area's natural spaces helped Buda to earn its official |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | designation as the Outdoor Capital of Texas; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Buda invites residents and visitors alike to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | "Breathe Easy," and all are welcomed to enjoy the natural beauty |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | of Onion Creek and Buda's pristine parklands, the charming |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | historic Main Street district, and a variety of community events, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | including the Downtown Buda Farmer's Market, many local holiday |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | celebrations, and the annual Buda Country Fair and Wiener Dog |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Races; and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Buda are building on an impressive |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | tradition of achievement and public spirit, and they may indeed |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | take great pride in their contributions to the story of the Lone |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 22, 2023, as Buda Day at the |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
