2	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	7		join the citizens of Arlington and Texans across the state in
4	8		celebrating March 22, 2023, as The University of Texas at
5	9		Arlington Day at the State Capitol; and
6	10		WHEREAS, Founded in 1895 as Arlington College, the school
7	11		initially provided instruction to approximately 75 students from
8	12		the elementary grades through a level roughly equivalent to high
9	13		school; the school was converted into Carlisle Military Academy
10	14		in 1902 and was subsequently known as Arlington Training School
11	15		and then Arlington Military Academy; and
12	16		WHEREAS, The institution transitioned in 1917 to become a
13	17		branch of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, now
14	18		Texas A&M University, and the college maintained the affiliation
15	19		after changing its name to North Texas Agricultural College; by
16	20		1949, it was considered the largest state-supported junior
17	21		college in the Southwest, and it was renamed Arlington State
18	22		College; and
19	23		WHEREAS, In 1959, the school established itself as a
20	24		comprehensive four-year institution, and six years later, it
21	25		joined The University of Texas System; the state legislature
22	26		conferred the school with its present-day name, The University of
23	27		Texas at Arlington, in 1967; and
24	28		WHEREAS, The university today is the second largest in The
25	29		University of Texas System; its faculty is noted for specialized
26	30		expertise in national defense, information technologies,
27		-	aerodynamics, health care informatics, energy-related disciplines,
28		-	bioengineering, and biotechnologies; in addition, the university
29		-	awards thousands of degrees each year in critical workforce fields
30		-	such as engineering and science, education, and social work, and
31		-	its nursing program has become the largest producer of
32		-	baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses in Texas; and

35	40		public university to achieve Texas Tier One status in 2021, and
36	41		it is one of only 21 universities nationwide to be categorized as
37	42		both a Tier One institution by the Carnegie Classification of
38	43		Institutions of Higher Education and as a Hispanic-Serving
39	44		Institution by the United States Department of Education; and
40	45		WHEREAS, For more than 125 years, The University of Texas
41	46		at Arlington has provided its students with a strong foundation
42	47		for achievement and has played a key role in fostering economic
43	48		development and enhancing the quality of life in the Lone Star
44	49		State; now, therefore, be it
45	50		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
46	51		Legislature, hereby recognize March 22, 2023, as The University
47	52		of Texas at Arlington Day at the State Capitol and extend to the
48	53		visiting delegation best wishes for a rewarding and memorable
49	54		gathering; and, be it further
50	55		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
51	56		honor of this special occasion.
