5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
26 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
37 join the citizens of Arlington and Texans across the state in
48 celebrating March 22, 2023, as The University of Texas at
59 Arlington Day at the State Capitol; and
610 WHEREAS, Founded in 1895 as Arlington College, the school
711 initially provided instruction to approximately 75 students from
812 the elementary grades through a level roughly equivalent to high
913 school; the school was converted into Carlisle Military Academy
1014 in 1902 and was subsequently known as Arlington Training School
1115 and then Arlington Military Academy; and
1216 WHEREAS, The institution transitioned in 1917 to become a
1317 branch of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, now
1418 Texas A&M University, and the college maintained the affiliation
1519 after changing its name to North Texas Agricultural College; by
1620 1949, it was considered the largest state-supported junior
1721 college in the Southwest, and it was renamed Arlington State
1822 College; and
1923 WHEREAS, In 1959, the school established itself as a
2024 comprehensive four-year institution, and six years later, it
2125 joined The University of Texas System; the state legislature
2226 conferred the school with its present-day name, The University of
2327 Texas at Arlington, in 1967; and
2428 WHEREAS, The university today is the second largest in The
2529 University of Texas System; its faculty is noted for specialized
2630 expertise in national defense, information technologies,
27- aerodynamics, health care informatics, energy-related disciplines,
28- bioengineering, and biotechnologies; in addition, the university
29- awards thousands of degrees each year in critical workforce fields
30- such as engineering and science, education, and social work, and
31- its nursing program has become the largest producer of
32- baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses in Texas; and
31+ aerodynamics, health care informatics, energy-related
32+ disciplines, bioengineering, and biotechnologies; in addition,
33+ the university awards thousands of degrees each year in critical
34+ workforce fields such as engineering and science, education, and
35+ social work, and its nursing program has become the largest

3338 WHEREAS, An inclusive and impactful research university,
3439 The University of Texas at Arlington was the state's fourth
3540 public university to achieve Texas Tier One status in 2021, and
3641 it is one of only 21 universities nationwide to be categorized as
3742 both a Tier One institution by the Carnegie Classification of
3843 Institutions of Higher Education and as a Hispanic-Serving
3944 Institution by the United States Department of Education; and
4045 WHEREAS, For more than 125 years, The University of Texas
4146 at Arlington has provided its students with a strong foundation
4247 for achievement and has played a key role in fostering economic
4348 development and enhancing the quality of life in the Lone Star
4449 State; now, therefore, be it
4550 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4651 Legislature, hereby recognize March 22, 2023, as The University
4752 of Texas at Arlington Day at the State Capitol and extend to the
4853 visiting delegation best wishes for a rewarding and memorable
4954 gathering; and, be it further
5055 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
5156 honor of this special occasion.
