56 WHEREAS, Residents of Tyler are mourning the loss of
67 Dr. Aubrey Sharpe, an esteemed civic leader and a friend to many,
78 who passed away on March 13, 2023, at the age of 78; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of William Gibson Sharp and Ila Mae Sharp,
910 Aubrey Sharpe was born in Miami, Florida, on October 4, 1944, and
1011 grew up with a sister, Patricia, and a brother, William; he
1112 graduated from East Texas Baptist University and went on to
1213 complete his doctoral degree at the University of North Texas; in
1314 1989, he joined the administration of Tyler Junior College; he
1415 served as executive dean of the Regional Training and Development
1516 Complex and as dean of the School of Continuing Studies, and he
1617 played a key role in launching both; in addition, he was
1718 instrumental in the creation of the Tyler Area Business Incubator
18- through a consortium that involved the City of Tyler and the
19- Tyler Economic Development Council; dedicated to workforce
20- development, he collaborated effectively with local employers
21- and business experts to design training courses and programs, and
22- he facilitated a partnership with the Service Corps of Retired
23- Executives; and
24- WHEREAS, Dr. Sharpe served as chair of the Tyler Area
25- Chamber of Commerce and shared his expertise in several roles
26- with the Tyler Economic Development Council; in addition, he
27- served on Tyler's Civil Service Commission and the Historic
28- Preservation Board, and he worked on planning and zoning issues;
29- he gave generously of his time and talents to a number of worthy
30- philanthropies, among them Meals on Wheels East Texas; over the
31- years, he served the United Way of Smith County in numerous
32- capacities, including as chair and as campaign chair, and he was
33- the organization's development officer at the time of his
34- passing; and

3635 nature, Dr. Sharpe was known to many as the "Man About Town"
3736 columnist for BScene and Tyler Today magazines, and his optimism
3837 and sense of humor brightened the days of all he encountered; and
3938 WHEREAS, Aubrey Sharpe is deeply missed by those he left
4039 behind, but they will treasure their memories of his warmth and
41- kindness, and his contributions to Tyler will continue to
42- resonate in the years to come; now, therefore, be it
43- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
44- Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Aubrey Sharpe
45- and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to
46- his wife, Linda Sharpe; to his brother, William Sharpe Jr.; to
47- his nephews and nieces, Michael Sharpe, David Sharpe, Dean
48- Furrer, Ronnie Sharpe Jr., Rebecca Furrer, Heather Baker, and
49- Michelle Sharpe; and to his other relatives and many friends;
50- and, be it further
40+ kindness, and his contributions to Tyler will continue to resonate
41+ in the years to come; now, therefore, be it
42+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
43+ hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Aubrey Sharpe and extend
44+ sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his wife, Linda
45+ Sharpe; to his brother, William Sharpe Jr.; to his nephews and
46+ nieces, Michael Sharpe, David Sharpe, Dean Furrer, Ronnie
47+ Sharpe Jr., Rebecca Furrer, Heather Baker, and Michelle Sharpe; and
48+ to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
5149 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
52- prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
53- this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Aubrey Sharpe.
