2	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	7		welcome the citizens of Mission who are gathering in Austin in
4	8		celebration of Mission Day at the Texas Capitol on March 29,
5	9		2023; and
6	10		WHEREAS, Mission has been one of the foremost commercial
7	11		and agricultural hubs along the Texas border since the city was
8	12		founded in 1908, the year the Missouri Pacific Railroad
9	13		established a station in the area; and
10	14		WHEREAS, Known as the home of the grapefruit, Mission has a
11	15		proud history of citrus-fruit farming since the first citrus
12	16		trees in the Rio Grande Valley were planted in the Mission area;
13	17		once a year, citizens come together at the Texas Citrus Fiesta to
14	18		celebrate their town's contributions to the multimillion-dollar
15	19		citrus industry; and
16	20		WHEREAS, A center for tourism and exchange between the
17	21		United States and Mexico, Mission boasts a flourishing economy
18	22		that has attracted agriculture associations, technology firms,
19	23		and international manufacturers; the Center for Education and
20	24		Economic Development, a business incubator and co-working
21	25		facility, has been instrumental in diversifying the local
22	26		economy and generating local business growth; and
23	27		WHEREAS, In addition to industrial development, Mission
24	28		offers a pleasant climate and beautiful natural surroundings to
25	29		its 86,000 residents and thousands of seasonal visitors who spend
26	30		the winter in Mission's many RV parks; locals and visitors enjoy
27	31		such attractions as Mission's National Butterfly Center, the
28	32		World Birding Center headquarters, the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley
29	33		State Park, and the Mission hike and bike trails; and
30	34		WHEREAS, Mission has been depicted in literature and
31	35		popular culture as the iconic setting of Larry McMurtry's classic
32	36		Western novel Lonesome Dove and its adapted television
33	37		miniseries; Mission is also noted as the home of such prominent
34	38		politicians and other well-known figures as United States
35	39		Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Congressman Kika de la Garza, and
36	40		legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry; and
37	41		WHEREAS, The people of Mission are justifiably proud of
38	42		their city for its cultural heritage and unique offerings, and

42	47		Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Mission on their
43	48		important contributions to the history and prosperity of our
44	49		state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable Mission Day
45	50		at the Capitol; and, be it further
46	51		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
47	52		honor of this special occasion.
