11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 374
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join in celebrating the grand reopening of Galveston Island State
44 Park, which is taking place on March 31 and April 1, 2023, during
55 the centennial year of Texas State Parks; and
66 WHEREAS, Along with many other areas on the Texas Gulf
77 Coast, Galveston Island State Park suffered catastrophic damage
88 in 2008 as a result of Hurricane Ike and its aftermath; the Texas
99 Parks and Wildlife Department has worked diligently since that
1010 time to restore the park, and with the aid of state and federal
1111 funding, the valuable assistance of partners including Friends
1212 of Galveston Island State Park and Texas Master Naturalist, and
1313 the dedicated efforts of numerous volunteers, the park was able
1414 to reopen for limited access just six months after Hurricane Ike,
1515 and today celebrates its grand reopening; and
1616 WHEREAS, Throughout the park's restoration, the Galveston
1717 Island State Park Beach Redevelopment project has served to focus
1818 and lead recovery efforts while working to conserve and protect
1919 the park's natural and cultural resources; the redevelopment
2020 project was realized through $10.6 million in funding provided
2121 through the Deepwater Horizon Natural Resources Damage
2222 Assessment Phase III Early Restoration program by its Texas
2323 trustees, and the project's funding leveraged money from the
2424 state's sales tax on sporting goods to design and rebuild the
2525 park with the goal of preservation and greater resilience against
2626 extreme weather events; and
2727 WHEREAS, The Galveston Island State Park Beach
2828 Redevelopment project has demonstrated Texas Parks and Wildlife
2929 Department's ongoing commitment to conserving the endangered
3030 Coastal Prairie habitat located within Galveston Island State
3131 Park, and the department's concerted efforts to restore and
3232 protect our state's natural resources continue to ensure that
3333 Texas residents and visitors and future generations of Texans
3434 will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy the state's
3535 treasured outdoor spaces and its enduring natural beauty; and
3636 WHEREAS, In celebration of the successful efforts and hard
3737 work of all who have contributed to the park's restoration, Texas
3838 Parks and Wildlife Department invites the public to attend a
3939 ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, March 31, to commemorate the
4040 park's reopening and welcomes visitors to the park on Saturday,
4141 April 1, to join in a day of celebration and to enjoy the park's
4242 unique natural setting and its numerous recreational
4343 opportunities; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4545 Legislature, hereby recognize the Texas Parks and Wildlife
4646 Department and the Galveston Island State Park Beach
4747 Redevelopment project and extend to all in attendance at the
4848 grand reopening of Galveston Island State Park best wishes for a
4949 memorable and enjoyable celebration; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
5151 honor of this special occasion.
