2	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	7		recognize the Summitt-Koblenz Exchange program, which has served
4	8		to enrich and expand the cultural horizons of Summitt Elementary
5	9		School students since the program's inception in 1992; and
6	10		WHEREAS, The Summitt-Koblenz Exchange is a
7	11		foreign-exchange and cultural immersion program that provides
8	12		the opportunity for students in the fourth and fifth grades at
9	13		Summitt Elementary School in Austin and at Schenkendorf Schule in
10	14		Koblenz, Germany, to host visiting exchange students and to
11	15		travel abroad to stay with host families of their sister school;
12	16		participating students submit essays and are selected by a
13	17		committee to take part in the program, and the schools alternate
14	18		between visiting and hosting each year; and
15	19		WHEREAS, The exchange program began in 1992, after Austin
16	20		and Koblenz became Sister Cities under Sister Cities
17	21		International; a group of Summitt Elementary School students
18	22		created artwork to present as gifts to a delegation visiting
19	23		Austin from Koblenz, and the group of students was invited to
20	24		visit Koblenz in the summer of 1993; the following year, students
21	25		from the Schenkendorf Schule traveled to Austin and were hosted
22	26		by families of Summitt Elementary School students, and a long and
23	27		rewarding partnership between the schools was begun; and
24	28		WHEREAS, The two schools and the cities of Austin and
25	29		Koblenz are proud to celebrate the Summitt-Koblenz Exchange
26	30		program's decades of success and the positive impact it has made
27	31		in the lives of students and families; the program's participants
28	32		and the educators, families, and members of the community of
29	33		Summitt Elementary School have benefited greatly from this
30	34		outstanding program over the years, and it is indeed fitting that
31	35		the program receive special recognition on its exemplary
32	36		contributions to the educational and cultural enrichment of
33	37		students in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
34	38		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
35	39		Legislature, hereby commend all who have contributed to carrying
36	40		on this treasured tradition on their invaluable efforts and
37	41		extend to all associated with the Summitt-Koblenz Exchange
38	42		program best wishes for the future and for the program's
39	43		continued success; and, be it further
40	44		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
41	45		expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
