6+ WHEREAS, Port Houston has served as an advocate and strategic
7+ leader for the Houston Ship Channel for more than a century; and
58 WHEREAS, Established in 1914, Port Houston now owns and
69 operates eight public terminals along the 52-mile waterway,
710 including the area's largest break-bulk facility and two of the
811 most efficient container terminals in the country; and
912 WHEREAS, With more than 200 public and private facilities,
1013 the ship channel complex is the nation's largest for waterborne
11- tonnage; the Houston Ship Channel handles more cargo than the
12- Ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and New York and New Jersey
13- combined; and
14+ tonnage; the Houston Ship Channel handles more cargo than the Ports
15+ of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and New York and New Jersey combined;
16+ and
1417 WHEREAS, Port Houston has handled a record amount of cargo
1518 tonnage in the past year; representing over 20 percent of Texas'
16- GDP, this cargo generates over 1.35 million jobs and more than
17- $339 billion in economic activity in the state; and

1821 WHEREAS, Guided by a seven-member board of port
19- commissioners, along with 13 executive staff members, Port
20- Houston works to advance the efficient flow of seaborne cargo on

22- and through community initiatives and international
23- partnerships, it adopts innovative technologies and implements
24- continual improvements in productivity, reliability, and
25- resiliency; while ensuring maximal freight mobility, it also
26- serves as a guardian of the channel environment; and
27- WHEREAS, Port Houston is the principal advocate for the
28- ship channel, and its efforts have been vital in the rapid
29- expansion of the waterway in order to take full advantage of
30- opportunities for international trade; currently, it is in the
31- process of widening and deepening the channel, coordinating with
32- strategic partners throughout the region on a project requiring
33- over $1 billion in investment; Port Houston also strives to raise
34- awareness of the needs of 19 other Texas seaports, whose efforts
35- are also crucial in maintaining the status of preferred state for
36- maritime commerce; and
37- WHEREAS, Through its skilled and forward-looking
38- stewardship of the Houston Ship Channel, Port Houston plays an
39- enormous role in the continued prosperity of Texas and in the
40- dominance of our energy industry, and it is indeed a pleasure to
41- welcome the port's representatives to the State Capitol; now,
42- therefore, be it
43- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
44- Legislature, hereby honor Port Houston for its contributions to
45- the Texas economy and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
46- best wishes for the future; and, be it further
