2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize April 5, 2023, as Alzheimer's Association State
4	4	Advocacy Day at the Capitol in honor of patients affected by the
5	5	disease, their families and caregivers, and the researchers and
6	6	medical professionals who work to understand, treat, and develop
7	7	a cure for Alzheimer's disease; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of
9	9	dementia, is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder that
10	10	leads to memory loss and mental and physical disabilities in the
11	11	individuals it affects; more than 6.7 million Americans,
12	12	including 400,000 Texans, have Alzheimer's disease; and
13	13	WHEREAS, In addition to reducing the cognitive abilities
14	14	and capacity for independence of the people it affects,
15	15	Alzheimer's is the most expensive disease in the United States,
16	16	costing more than cancer and heart diseases combined; and
17	17	WHEREAS, More than one million dedicated caregivers in
18	18	Texas provide unpaid care for Alzheimer's patients at home, and
19	19	the labor of these heroic Texans is valued at more than $23.5
20	20	billion; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Alzheimer's has indirect effects on business and
22	22	the labor market that result in tremendous losses in human
23	23	capital due to workers who must leave paid employment to serve as
24	24	caregivers; according to the National Institute on Aging,
25	25	Alzheimer's disease costs businesses more than $37 billion
26	26	annually in lost productivity for employees who miss work or
27	27	leave their jobs permanently to care for a loved one; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Increasing public knowledge and awareness of
29	29	Alzheimer's disease increases the likelihood of early detection
30	30	and diagnosis for individuals affected by the disease, and
31	31	equipping families and communities with a greater understanding
32	32	of the disease provides them the opportunity to plan for the
33	33	future, access treatment and medications, enroll in critical
34	34	research trials, and receive help and support from the
35	35	Alzheimer's Association; now, therefore, be it
36	36	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
37	37	Legislature, hereby recognize April 5, 2023, as Alzheimer's
38	38	Association State Advocacy Day at the Capitol and commend the
39	39	Alzheimer's Association, its dedicated volunteers, and all who
40	40	contribute to the efforts of the association on their outstanding
41	41	advocacy on behalf of those affected by Alzheimer's disease; and,
42	42	be it further
43	43	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
44	44	the Alzheimer's Association as an expression of esteem from the
45	45	Texas Senate.
