11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 389
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize April 5, 2023, as Alzheimer's Association State
44 Advocacy Day at the Capitol in honor of patients affected by the
55 disease, their families and caregivers, and the researchers and
66 medical professionals who work to understand, treat, and develop
77 a cure for Alzheimer's disease; and
88 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of
99 dementia, is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder that
1010 leads to memory loss and mental and physical disabilities in the
1111 individuals it affects; more than 6.7 million Americans,
1212 including 400,000 Texans, have Alzheimer's disease; and
1313 WHEREAS, In addition to reducing the cognitive abilities
1414 and capacity for independence of the people it affects,
1515 Alzheimer's is the most expensive disease in the United States,
1616 costing more than cancer and heart diseases combined; and
1717 WHEREAS, More than one million dedicated caregivers in
1818 Texas provide unpaid care for Alzheimer's patients at home, and
1919 the labor of these heroic Texans is valued at more than $23.5
2020 billion; and
2121 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's has indirect effects on business and
2222 the labor market that result in tremendous losses in human
2323 capital due to workers who must leave paid employment to serve as
2424 caregivers; according to the National Institute on Aging,
2525 Alzheimer's disease costs businesses more than $37 billion
2626 annually in lost productivity for employees who miss work or
2727 leave their jobs permanently to care for a loved one; and
2828 WHEREAS, Increasing public knowledge and awareness of
2929 Alzheimer's disease increases the likelihood of early detection
3030 and diagnosis for individuals affected by the disease, and
3131 equipping families and communities with a greater understanding
3232 of the disease provides them the opportunity to plan for the
3333 future, access treatment and medications, enroll in critical
3434 research trials, and receive help and support from the
3535 Alzheimer's Association; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3737 Legislature, hereby recognize April 5, 2023, as Alzheimer's
3838 Association State Advocacy Day at the Capitol and commend the
3939 Alzheimer's Association, its dedicated volunteers, and all who
4040 contribute to the efforts of the association on their outstanding
4141 advocacy on behalf of those affected by Alzheimer's disease; and,
4242 be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 the Alzheimer's Association as an expression of esteem from the
4545 Texas Senate.
