66 WHEREAS, Since 1980, the Texas Lyceum has united the efforts
77 of dynamic leaders committed to addressing the challenges facing
88 our state and nation; and
99 WHEREAS, Nonpartisan, nonpolitical, and nonadversarial, the
1010 Texas Lyceum is based on a concept dating back more than 2,500
1111 years, to the Aristotelian debates of ancient Greece; Connecticut
1212 resident Josiah Holbrook sparked a resurgence of the lyceum in the
1313 1820s, and in the following decade, a lyceum was established in
1414 Austin; this predecessor of the Texas Lyceum welcomed Sam Houston
1515 as an honorary member, and it debated critical issues of the
1616 American frontier, including annexation, slavery, and temperance;
1717 and
1818 WHEREAS, The Texas Lyceum counts among its alumni such
1919 notable figures as Governor Greg Abbott, former governor and U.S.
2020 energy secretary Rick Perry, former president George W. Bush, and
2121 Senator Ted Cruz; the organization works to develop the next
2222 generation of leaders while enhancing understanding of
2323 contemporary problems among today's decision-makers; serving as a
2424 catalyst for the exchange of diverse expertise and opinions, it
2525 hosts conferences and other programs that further productive
2626 discussions; in addition, it conducts the nationally recognized
2727 Texas Lyceum Poll and offers fellowships to expand opportunities
2828 for graduate students in public administration; and
2929 WHEREAS, In 2023, the Texas Lyceum is sponsoring a public
3030 conference, A Lyceum Look at Elections, in Austin from January 26 to
3131 28; the Texas Senate heartily supports the worthy goals of the
3232 organization and of this gathering; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature, in
3434 accordance with Senate rules of procedure and policies of the
3535 Senate Administration Committee, hereby grant the Texas Lyceum
3636 permission to use the Senate Chamber in the State Capitol on January
3737 26, 2023, from 3 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., for its presidential and new
3838 class investiture, unless the Texas Senate is in session on that
3939 date.
