6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Since 1980, the Texas Lyceum has united the efforts |

7 | 7 | | of dynamic leaders committed to addressing the challenges facing |

8 | 8 | | our state and nation; and |

9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Nonpartisan, nonpolitical, and nonadversarial, the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Texas Lyceum is based on a concept dating back more than 2,500 |
---|
11 | 11 | | years, to the Aristotelian debates of ancient Greece; Connecticut |
---|
12 | 12 | | resident Josiah Holbrook sparked a resurgence of the lyceum in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | 1820s, and in the following decade, a lyceum was established in |
---|
14 | 14 | | Austin; this predecessor of the Texas Lyceum welcomed Sam Houston |
---|
15 | 15 | | as an honorary member, and it debated critical issues of the |
---|
16 | 16 | | American frontier, including annexation, slavery, and temperance; |
---|

---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Lyceum counts among its alumni such |
---|
19 | 19 | | notable figures as Governor Greg Abbott, former governor and U.S. |
---|
20 | 20 | | energy secretary Rick Perry, former president George W. Bush, and |
---|
21 | 21 | | Senator Ted Cruz; the organization works to develop the next |
---|
22 | 22 | | generation of leaders while enhancing understanding of |
---|
23 | 23 | | contemporary problems among today's decision-makers; serving as a |
---|
24 | 24 | | catalyst for the exchange of diverse expertise and opinions, it |
---|
25 | 25 | | hosts conferences and other programs that further productive |
---|
26 | 26 | | discussions; in addition, it conducts the nationally recognized |
---|
27 | 27 | | Texas Lyceum Poll and offers fellowships to expand opportunities |
---|
28 | 28 | | for graduate students in public administration; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, In 2023, the Texas Lyceum is sponsoring a public |
---|
30 | 30 | | conference, A Lyceum Look at Elections, in Austin from January 26 to |
---|
31 | 31 | | 28; the Texas Senate heartily supports the worthy goals of the |
---|
32 | 32 | | organization and of this gathering; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature, in |
---|
34 | 34 | | accordance with Senate rules of procedure and policies of the |
---|
35 | 35 | | Senate Administration Committee, hereby grant the Texas Lyceum |
---|
36 | 36 | | permission to use the Senate Chamber in the State Capitol on January |
---|
37 | 37 | | 26, 2023, from 3 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., for its presidential and new |
---|
38 | 38 | | class investiture, unless the Texas Senate is in session on that |
---|
39 | 39 | | date. |
