2- WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Mesquite are gathering in
3- Austin on April 12, 2023, to celebrate Mesquite Day at the State
4- Capitol; and
5- WHEREAS, Located in Dallas and Kaufman Counties,
6- Mesquite started as a depot town by the Texas and Pacific
7- Railway in May 1873; named after nearby Mesquite Creek, the
8- city was officially incorporated on December 3, 1887, and it
9- largely had an agrarian economy in its early days, growing
10- cotton, hay, corn, and sugar; and
11- WHEREAS, Today, Mesquite is a vibrant and diverse city with
12- a population of some 152,000; part of the Dallas-Fort Worth

6+ WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Mesquite are gathering in Austin
7+ on April 12, 2023, to celebrate Mesquite Day at the State Capitol;
8+ and
9+ WHEREAS, Located in Dallas and Kaufman Counties, Mesquite
10+ started as a depot town by the Texas and Pacific Railway in May
11+ 1873; named after nearby Mesquite Creek, the city was officially
12+ incorporated on December 3, 1887, and it largely had an agrarian
13+ economy in its early days, growing cotton, hay, corn, and sugar; and
14+ WHEREAS, Today, Mesquite is a vibrant and diverse city with a
15+ population of some 152,000; part of the Dallas-Fort Worth
1316 metroplex, the town boasts a welcoming business environment
1417 facilitated by easy access to four major highways, the Mesquite
1518 Metro Airport, and the Union Pacific Intermodal; and
16- WHEREAS, Local industry encompasses chemical products,
17- food and beverage distribution, e-commerce, production
18- technology, and creative products; the city also serves as a
19- regional retail hub that is anchored by Town East Mall, and it is
20- home to the Dallas Regional Medical Center and two of the largest
21- furniture producers in the state, including Ashley Furniture
22- Industries; in recent years, the company has embarked on an
23- expansion that will ultimately result in a 1,577,000-square-foot
24- regional manufacturing, distribution, and fulfillment center and
25- more than 300 additional jobs in Mesquite; and

27- opportunities provided by the Mesquite Independent School
28- District and the Dallas College Eastfield Campus; residents and
29- visitors alike enjoy the recreational opportunities afforded by
30- the Mesquite Golf Club as well as access to more than 70 public
31- parks and 17 miles of public trails connecting to Dallas and
32- Garland; the Mesquite Arts Center, which opened in December 1995,
33- is a 36,700-square-foot arts facility that houses a music
34- performance hall, black box theater, rehearsal hall, and
35- galleries; and
30+ opportunities provided by the Mesquite Independent School District
31+ and the Dallas College Eastfield Campus; residents and visitors
32+ alike enjoy the recreational opportunities afforded by the Mesquite

39- and has been recognized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys
40- Association with its Small Rodeo of the Year Award; moreover, the
41- town boasts two professional sports teams, the Mesquite Outlaws
42- and the Dallas Outlaws; and
43- WHEREAS, The citizens of Mesquite take great pleasure in
44- the city's high quality of life, and they continue to make vital

47- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
48- Legislature, hereby recognize April 12, 2023, as Mesquite Day at
49- the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
50- delegation.
