2- WHEREAS, Residents of Port Aransas are gathering in Austin
3- on April 12, 2023, to celebrate Port Aransas Day at the State
4- Capitol; and
5- WHEREAS, In the early 1800s, Mustang Island was frequented
6- by the famed buccaneer Jean Lafitte, and in 1855, an English
7- sheep and cattle rancher named Robert A. Mercer built a cabin on
8- the island; a community developed around the site, and the first
9- post office was established in 1888; initially called
10- Ropesville, the town was renamed Tarpon eight years later to
11- highlight the island's fine fishing, and in 1911, it was
12- officially designated as Port Aransas; and

24- visitors may delight in the town's art galleries, shops,
25- restaurants, and locations of historical interest; and

3034 WHEREAS, The community is served by the Port Aransas
3135 Independent School District, which has consistently earned an A
3236 accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency, and it

34- The University of Texas Marine Science Institute, which supports

37- WHEREAS, Blessed with natural beauty and a colorful
38- history, Port Aransas is one of the Lone Star State's great
39- treasures, and its citizens may indeed take pride in their rich
40- heritage and ongoing achievements; now, therefore, be it
41- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas 88th
42- Legislature, hereby recognize April 12, 2023, as Port Aransas Day
43- at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
44- sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
