2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Juan "Trey" Mendez III for his public service as mayor |
---|
4 | 4 | | of Brownsville; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Mendez was elected to the Brownsville |
---|
6 | 6 | | mayoral office in 2019; throughout his service in public office, |
---|
7 | 7 | | he has been noted for his focus on higher education, expanding |
---|
8 | 8 | | broadband connectivity, and economic development; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The second youngest mayor in Brownsville's |
---|
10 | 10 | | history, Mayor Mendez previously served for almost a decade at |
---|
11 | 11 | | Texas Southmost College; as mayor, he promoted affordable |
---|
12 | 12 | | tuition at the community college, which led to a tuition |
---|
13 | 13 | | reduction of 40 percent and the highest enrollment rate in the |
---|
14 | 14 | | institution's history; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Mendez was instrumental in the building of |
---|
16 | 16 | | middle-mile infrastructure in Brownsville, which had been named |
---|
17 | 17 | | the least connected community in the United States; he received a |
---|
18 | 18 | | New Century Cities Change Maker award for his work expanding |
---|
19 | 19 | | broadband connectivity in the Rio Grande Valley; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Throughout Mayor Mendez's tenure, Brownsville has |
---|
21 | 21 | | focused on becoming a Space City; it is home to SpaceX, and Spaced |
---|
22 | 22 | | Ventures and the Space Channel have relocated to Brownsville, |
---|
23 | 23 | | bolstering the economy and designating the town as a place where |
---|
24 | 24 | | new technology thrives; also under Mayor Mendez's governance, |
---|
25 | 25 | | Tesla opened a delivery and service center; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Mendez has been a dedicated and |
---|
27 | 27 | | forward-thinking public servant for the past four years, leading |
---|
28 | 28 | | his city into an era of new opportunities and greater inclusion; |
---|
29 | 29 | | it is truly fitting that he receive special recognition as he |
---|
30 | 30 | | moves on from his role as Brownsville's mayor; now, therefore, be |
---|

32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |

33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend Mayor Trey Mendez on his exceptional |
---|
34 | 34 | | service to the people of Brownsville and extend to him best |

35 | 35 | | wishes for continued success in all his future endeavors; and, be |
