5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Brownsville lost an esteemed |

6 | 6 | | community leader with the passing of former mayor Enrique C. |

7 | 7 | | González on March 24, 2023, at the age of 87; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Maria and Emilio González, Henry |
---|
9 | 9 | | González was born in San Benito on November 29, 1935, and he grew |
---|
10 | 10 | | up with the companionship of seven siblings, Reynaldo, Gloria, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Maria, Delia, Emiliano, Carlos, and Carmen; in his youth, he |
---|
12 | 12 | | learned the value of hard work through part-time jobs on his |
---|
13 | 13 | | family's farm; he graduated in 1954 from Saint Joseph Academy, |
---|
14 | 14 | | where he played on the football and basketball teams, and he went |
---|
15 | 15 | | on to earn a degree in business marketing from the Agricultural |
---|
16 | 16 | | and Mechanical College of Texas in 1958; he was a member of the |
---|
17 | 17 | | Corps of Cadets in the C-Field Artillery outfit during his years |
---|
18 | 18 | | in College Station; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. González worked in the cotton industry and |
---|
20 | 20 | | traveled across the U.S. before joining the Brownsville |
---|
21 | 21 | | Independent School District in 1962; over the course of his 13-year |
---|
22 | 22 | | tenure, he served as an educator and later as the district's |
---|
23 | 23 | | director of transportation and supplies; he became a trustee on the |
---|
24 | 24 | | school board in 1975, and his achievements in that role included |
---|
25 | 25 | | serving as president, securing passage of bond proposals, and |
---|
26 | 26 | | guiding the construction of new schools; he later embarked on a |
---|
27 | 27 | | rewarding career with the Oyster Bar restaurant, and he played an |
---|
28 | 28 | | instrumental role in managing its Rio Grande Valley expansion as |
---|
29 | 29 | | well as its location on Paredes Line Road; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In the early 1990s, Mr. González returned to |
---|
31 | 31 | | public office, first winning election as a Brownsville city |
---|
32 | 32 | | commissioner and later as mayor, serving in each role for five |
---|
33 | 33 | | years; under his able leadership, the city acquired a new city |
---|
34 | 34 | | hall facility, completed construction of the Veterans |
---|
35 | 35 | | International Bridge at Los Tomates, and established a Sister |
---|
36 | 36 | | City relationship with Matamoros; he also guided Brownsville |
---|
37 | 37 | | through a period of economic growth, and he played an |
---|
38 | 38 | | instrumental role in promoting the Make a Difference Day |
---|
39 | 39 | | community cleanup initiative; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. González benefited from |
---|
41 | 41 | | the love and support of his wife, Mary Lou, with whom he shared a |
---|
42 | 42 | | fulfilling marriage that spanned 65 years; he took great pride in |
---|
43 | 43 | | his children, Henry, Cissie, Lettie, Magda, and Justo, and over |
---|
44 | 44 | | the years, his treasured family grew to include six grandchildren |
---|
45 | 45 | | and four great-grandchildren; throughout his life, he found |
---|
46 | 46 | | strength in his Catholic faith; and |
---|
47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man, a hard-working public |
---|
48 | 48 | | servant, and an accomplished business leader, Henry González |
---|
49 | 49 | | lived a rich and purposeful life, and he leaves behind a record of |
---|
50 | 50 | | service that his loved ones can remember with pride; now, |
---|
51 | 51 | | therefore, be it |
---|
52 | 52 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
53 | 53 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Enrique C. |
---|
54 | 54 | | González and extend heartfelt sympathy to all who mourn his |
---|
55 | 55 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
56 | 56 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
57 | 57 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
---|
58 | 58 | | this day, it do so in memory of Henry González. |
