26 WHEREAS, Each year on April 21, people throughout the Lone
37 Star State commemorate San Jacinto Day in honor of the decisive
48 battlefield victory that brought about the independence of the
59 Republic of Texas; and
6- WHEREAS, On that date in the year 1836, the Texan forces
7- led by General Sam Houston faced a crucial moment in their
8- revolutionary struggle against the rule of Mexican dictator
9- Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna; over the course of the previous six
10- weeks, Texan forces had been defeated at both the Alamo and
11- Goliad, and General Houston's army had retreated steadily to the
12- east; meanwhile, the Mexican troops commanded by General Santa
13- Anna were determined to follow up their earlier victories by
14- seizing the seaports along the Texas coast; by mid-April, the two
15- armies were within a few miles of one another in the bayou country
16- near the San Jacinto River; General Houston decided that the time
17- for attack had arrived; and
10+ WHEREAS, On that date in the year 1836, the Texan forces led

1923 the Texans formed their battle lines, and with cries of "Remember

21- Mexican encampment; when the guns went quiet less than 20 minutes
22- later, the Mexican army had been routed, with more than 600 of its
23- troops killed and more than 700 taken prisoner; only nine Texans
24- were killed or mortally wounded in the fighting; and
25- WHEREAS, The following day, General Santa Anna was
26- captured and, after meeting with General Houston, agreed to order
27- all Mexican troops to leave Texas; later, he agreed to the
28- Treaties of Velasco, which recognized the independence of Texas;
29- with these steps, Mexican rule in Texas effectively came to an
30- end, and the Republic of Texas was established; and
31- WHEREAS, Individuals from a range of backgrounds
32- contributed to this epic battlefield victory; among them were a
33- company of Tejano troops who served bravely under the command of
34- the prominent revolutionary leader Juan Nepomuceno Seguin and
35- are representative of the many Hispanics who took up arms in the
36- independence movement; another Latino member of the Texan army
37- was Lorenzo de Zavala Jr., the son of the republic's vice
38- president; as an aide to Sam Houston, he acted as a translator in
39- the general's negotiations with Santa Anna; and
40- WHEREAS, Soldiers young and old were part of the fight for
41- the Texans; there were teenagers such as 15-year-old William P.
42- Zuber, 16-year-olds Thomas O'Conner and Cornelius DeVore, and
