11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 464
22 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Alamo are gathering in Austin
33 on April 26, 2023, to celebrate the City of Alamo Day at the State
44 Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Situated in the Rio Grande Valley, the city of
66 Alamo is located in Hidalgo County and is known as "The Refuge to
77 the Valley"; the area's first settlers were primarily farmers and
88 ranchers who were attracted to the region by its fertile land and
99 abundant water supply; after the arrival of the railroad in the
1010 early 1900s, the area experienced significant growth and
1111 development; in the years that followed, Alamo became an
1212 important agricultural center in the Rio Grande Valley, and crops
1313 such as cotton, citrus, and sorghum were major contributors to
1414 the local economy; the city was officially incorporated on May
1515 12, 1924, and it was named after the Indian-Spanish term for the
1616 cottonwood tree; and
1717 WHEREAS, Today, Alamo is a thriving city of nearly 19,500
1818 citizens that boasts a strong agricultural industry, and it
1919 continues to grow in commerce, ecotourism, and the arts;
2020 residents and visitors alike benefit from its close proximity to
2121 a number of popular tourist attractions, including South Padre
2222 Island and the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and outdoor
2323 enthusiasts are drawn to the area for activities such as hiking,
2424 birdwatching, and camping; furthermore, the city has remained
2525 true to its cultural heritage and celebrates its history and
2626 traditions with such events as the annual Alamo Watermelon
2727 Festival, which is a state-sanctioned BBQ cook-off that honors
2828 the community's agricultural roots; and
2929 WHEREAS, Acknowledging their rich history as they work to
3030 build an even brighter future, the citizens of Alamo are
3131 justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to
3232 honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State;
3333 now, therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3535 Legislature, hereby recognize April 26, 2023, as the City of
3636 Alamo Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting
3737 delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable
3838 stay in Austin.
