2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Alamo are gathering in Austin |

3 | 3 | | on April 26, 2023, to celebrate the City of Alamo Day at the State |
---|
4 | 4 | | Capitol; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Rio Grande Valley, the city of |
---|
6 | 6 | | Alamo is located in Hidalgo County and is known as "The Refuge to |
---|
7 | 7 | | the Valley"; the area's first settlers were primarily farmers and |
---|
8 | 8 | | ranchers who were attracted to the region by its fertile land and |
---|
9 | 9 | | abundant water supply; after the arrival of the railroad in the |
---|
10 | 10 | | early 1900s, the area experienced significant growth and |
---|
11 | 11 | | development; in the years that followed, Alamo became an |
---|
12 | 12 | | important agricultural center in the Rio Grande Valley, and crops |
---|
13 | 13 | | such as cotton, citrus, and sorghum were major contributors to |
---|
14 | 14 | | the local economy; the city was officially incorporated on May |
---|
15 | 15 | | 12, 1924, and it was named after the Indian-Spanish term for the |
---|
16 | 16 | | cottonwood tree; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, Alamo is a thriving city of nearly 19,500 |
---|
18 | 18 | | citizens that boasts a strong agricultural industry, and it |
---|
19 | 19 | | continues to grow in commerce, ecotourism, and the arts; |
---|
20 | 20 | | residents and visitors alike benefit from its close proximity to |
---|
21 | 21 | | a number of popular tourist attractions, including South Padre |
---|
22 | 22 | | Island and the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and outdoor |
---|
23 | 23 | | enthusiasts are drawn to the area for activities such as hiking, |
---|
24 | 24 | | birdwatching, and camping; furthermore, the city has remained |
---|
25 | 25 | | true to its cultural heritage and celebrates its history and |
---|
26 | 26 | | traditions with such events as the annual Alamo Watermelon |
---|
27 | 27 | | Festival, which is a state-sanctioned BBQ cook-off that honors |
---|
28 | 28 | | the community's agricultural roots; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Acknowledging their rich history as they work to |
---|
30 | 30 | | build an even brighter future, the citizens of Alamo are |
---|
31 | 31 | | justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
---|
32 | 32 | | honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; |
---|
33 | 33 | | now, therefore, be it |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby recognize April 26, 2023, as the City of |
---|
36 | 36 | | Alamo Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting |
---|
37 | 37 | | delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable |
---|
