26 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Wilson County are gathering in
37 Austin on April 25, 2023, to celebrate Wilson County Day at the
48 State Capitol; and
5- WHEREAS, Situated on the upper coastal plain of South
6- Texas, Wilson County was initially inhabited by Native Americans
7- of the Coahuiltecan linguistic family; Spanish explorers
8- traveled through the area in the early 18th century, and
9- permanent settlement began some time before 1830; the first Anglo
10- settlers arrived in the late 1840s, and in the following decades,
11- the region attracted a number of planters from the southern
12- states as well as German and Polish immigrants from other Texas
13- counties; and
9+ WHEREAS, Situated on the upper coastal plain of South Texas,
10+ Wilson County was initially inhabited by Native Americans of the
11+ Coahuiltecan linguistic family; Spanish explorers traveled through
12+ the area in the early 18th century, and permanent settlement began
13+ some time before 1830; the first Anglo settlers arrived in the late
14+ 1840s, and in the following decades, the region attracted a number
15+ of planters from the southern states as well as German and Polish
16+ immigrants from other Texas counties; and
1417 WHEREAS, Wilson County was officially established on
1518 February 13, 1860, and the town of Sutherland Springs was
1619 designated as its first county seat; named for James C. Wilson, a
1720 legislator and member of the Somervell expedition, the county
18- encompasses sections that were originally part of Bexar and
19- Karnes Counties; the county seat alternated between Sutherland
20- Springs and Lodi before a November 1873 election named
21- Floresville as the new county seat, a decision that is still in
22- effect today; the county's other communities include Poth,
23- Stockdale, La Vernia, and Pandora; and
24- WHEREAS, A significant portion of Wilson County is
25- considered prime farmland, and the area serves as an important
26- source of peanuts, hay, sorghum, oats, wheat, corn, watermelons,
27- peaches, and pecans; the county has also benefited from the
28- ranching industry, and cattle, dairy, hogs, and poultry have long
29- been major agricultural products in the region; and

35- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
36- Legislature, hereby recognize April 25, 2023, as Wilson County
37- Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
38- delegation.
