22 WHEREAS, Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase (AADC)
33 Deficiency Awareness Day is being observed to focus attention on
44 this rare disease and to help educate the community, physicians,
55 and specialists about its symptoms to facilitate early
66 detection; and
77 WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency is a rare genetic neurological
88 disease, and there have been approximately 200 cases of AADC
99 Deficiency reported worldwide; and
1010 WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency is a life-limiting, severely
1111 debilitating condition that significantly impacts a patient's
1212 development, motor skills, growth, cognition, and language
1313 skills; and
1414 WHEREAS, The disease results from an inherited genetic
1515 mutation that causes patients to lack the AADC enzyme that is
1616 required to create dopamine; without dopamine, patients can
1717 never achieve motor milestones like holding their heads up,
1818 sitting, and standing and are unable to develop the ability to
1919 communicate or to meet the most basic of life's needs; and
2020 WHEREAS, Patients with AADC Deficiency often have low
2121 muscle tone that is unexplained and does not improve; such
2222 patients also suffer from involuntary eye movements and
2323 developmental delays; AADC Deficiency is often mistaken for
2424 other diseases like cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or autism; and
2525 WHEREAS, Patients are diagnosed with AADC Deficiency
2626 through genetic and other biochemical tests; and
2727 WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency Awareness Day serves as a vital
2828 means of helping inform the public and the medical community
2929 about the condition, and this awareness can help patients who may
3030 be experiencing the symptoms of AADC to receive appropriate
3131 treatment; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3333 Legislature, hereby recognize AADC Deficiency Awareness Day and
3434 encourage Texans to learn more about the disease.
