| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase (AADC) |

| 3 | 3 | | Deficiency Awareness Day is being observed to focus attention on |

| 4 | 4 | | this rare disease and to help educate the community, physicians, |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | and specialists about its symptoms to facilitate early |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | detection; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency is a rare genetic neurological |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | disease, and there have been approximately 200 cases of AADC |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Deficiency reported worldwide; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency is a life-limiting, severely |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | debilitating condition that significantly impacts a patient's |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | development, motor skills, growth, cognition, and language |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | skills; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The disease results from an inherited genetic |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | mutation that causes patients to lack the AADC enzyme that is |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | required to create dopamine; without dopamine, patients can |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | never achieve motor milestones like holding their heads up, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | sitting, and standing and are unable to develop the ability to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | communicate or to meet the most basic of life's needs; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Patients with AADC Deficiency often have low |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | muscle tone that is unexplained and does not improve; such |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | patients also suffer from involuntary eye movements and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | developmental delays; AADC Deficiency is often mistaken for |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | other diseases like cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or autism; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Patients are diagnosed with AADC Deficiency |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | through genetic and other biochemical tests; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency Awareness Day serves as a vital |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | means of helping inform the public and the medical community |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | about the condition, and this awareness can help patients who may |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | be experiencing the symptoms of AADC to receive appropriate |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | treatment; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize AADC Deficiency Awareness Day and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | encourage Texans to learn more about the disease. |
