| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the chess program of The University of Texas Rio Grande |

| 4 | 4 | | Valley on its many contributions to the appreciation of chess in |

| 5 | 5 | | the Lone Star State; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Since the late 1980s, the City of Brownsville has |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | maintained a stellar reputation in school chess competitions |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | across the nation; this renown has grown with the establishment in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 2015 of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the school's |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | chess program, which has attracted world-class players; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | contributed immeasurably to the game of chess in Texas and has |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | hosted local tournaments as well as state championships; in 2023, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the team will host the Texas Women's Championship, the Texas Girls' |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Championship, the Texas Grade Championships, and the Texas |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Collegiate Super Finals; the university also offers an upper-level |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | course on the mathematics of chess, the second course of its kind to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | be offered by a university in the United States; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Under the exemplary leadership of chess coach |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Bartek Macieja and manager Alex Mista, the University of Texas |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Rio Grande Valley chess program has enjoyed great success, and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the team has retained its number one ranking in Texas for many |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | years; the team's previous victories include winning the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | world-class Kasparov Chess Foundation University Cup in 2021 and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | 2022 and the Collegiate Chess League competition in 2022; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the educators and students of The |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | University of Texas Rio Grande Valley have consistently |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | demonstrated superior skill and great dedication to chess |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | competition, and they are indeed deserving of special |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | recognition for their outstanding accomplishments; now, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | therefore, be it |

| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |

| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend the members of the University of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Texas Rio Grande Valley chess program on their many achievements |

| 35 | 35 | | and extend to all best wishes for continued success in their |
|---|
