11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 493
22 WHEREAS, Philanthropists Joe R. Long and his late wife,
33 Dr. Teresa Lozano Long, have greatly benefited Texans through
44 their wide-ranging professional and civic contributions; and
55 WHEREAS, An army veteran and graduate of The University of
66 Texas at Austin School of Law, Mr. Long initially distinguished
77 himself in state government; he served as chief of the State
88 Securities Board Enforcement Division and the Bond, Insurance,
99 and Banking Division of the Office of the Attorney General before
1010 embarking on a noteworthy career in banking, savings and loan,
1111 and securities law; part of a group that organized two Austin
1212 banks, he ultimately became chair and principal owner; he
1313 expanded his holdings and served from 1989 to 1998 as chair and
1414 CEO of First State Bank, with nearly 50 branches across Texas;
1515 after it was sold to Norwest Corporation, now Wells Fargo
1616 Corporation, he consulted for the company until 2000, when he
1717 focused his attention on his private business interests and many
1818 philanthropic endeavors; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mr. Long and Dr. Long shared a deep commitment to
2020 higher education and gave $100 million or more to UT Austin, UT
2121 Health San Antonio, and UT Rio Grande Valley; they created a
2222 major endowment for the UT Austin Institute of Latin American
2323 Studies, now named after Dr. Long; the medical school and campus
2424 at UT Health San Antonio bear their names as well, acknowledging
2525 a transformational donation; benefiting UT Law, they founded the
2626 Long Career Launch program to help recent graduates and also
2727 endowed scholarships and a faculty chair in administrative law;
2828 Mr. Long is a trustee of the UT Law School Foundation and
2929 received the Law School's Honorary Order of the Coif Award, and
3030 he has further served as a member of the Chancellor's Council and
3131 the UT Development Board; in 2018, the Longs were recognized with
3232 the UT System Regents' highest honor, the Santa Rita Award; and
3333 Mr. Long and Dr. Long also received UT's Distinguished Alumnus
3434 Award and the Presidential Citation; and
3535 WHEREAS, In 1999, the Longs provided a lead gift of $20
3636 million for the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the
3737 Performing Arts in Austin; Mr. Long has given generously of his
3838 expertise as president of the Austin Symphony Orchestra Society
3939 and as a member of the Arts Center Stage board; in 2005, he and
4040 Dr. Long were awarded the Texas Medal of Arts; their many joint
4141 accolades also include the Ohtli Award from the Consulate General
4242 of Mexico in Austin; additionally, Mr. Long has served on the
4343 boards of the Headliners Club, the Seton Fund, and Caritas of
4444 Austin; and
4545 WHEREAS, Joe and Terry Long have made a lasting, positive
4646 difference in the lives of many Texans through their support for
4747 education, the arts, and countless other worthy causes, and their
4848 sterling example of civic leadership is a source of inspiration
4949 to all; and
5050 WHEREAS, Theirs is a lifelong love story that culminated in
5151 their sharing that love with the people and especially the
5252 children and future teachers, doctors, and other professionals
5353 and leaders of Texas; now, therefore, be it
5454 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
5555 Legislature, hereby honor Joe R. and Dr. Teresa Lozano Long for
5656 their exceptional contributions and extend to him sincere best
5757 wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5959 prepared for Mr. Long as an expression of high regard from the
6060 Texas Senate.
