2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Philanthropists Joe R. Long and his late wife, |

3 | 3 | | Dr. Teresa Lozano Long, have greatly benefited Texans through |
---|
4 | 4 | | their wide-ranging professional and civic contributions; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, An army veteran and graduate of The University of |
---|
6 | 6 | | Texas at Austin School of Law, Mr. Long initially distinguished |
---|
7 | 7 | | himself in state government; he served as chief of the State |
---|
8 | 8 | | Securities Board Enforcement Division and the Bond, Insurance, |
---|
9 | 9 | | and Banking Division of the Office of the Attorney General before |
---|
10 | 10 | | embarking on a noteworthy career in banking, savings and loan, |
---|
11 | 11 | | and securities law; part of a group that organized two Austin |
---|
12 | 12 | | banks, he ultimately became chair and principal owner; he |
---|
13 | 13 | | expanded his holdings and served from 1989 to 1998 as chair and |
---|
14 | 14 | | CEO of First State Bank, with nearly 50 branches across Texas; |
---|
15 | 15 | | after it was sold to Norwest Corporation, now Wells Fargo |
---|
16 | 16 | | Corporation, he consulted for the company until 2000, when he |
---|
17 | 17 | | focused his attention on his private business interests and many |
---|
18 | 18 | | philanthropic endeavors; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Long and Dr. Long shared a deep commitment to |
---|
20 | 20 | | higher education and gave $100 million or more to UT Austin, UT |
---|
21 | 21 | | Health San Antonio, and UT Rio Grande Valley; they created a |
---|
22 | 22 | | major endowment for the UT Austin Institute of Latin American |
---|
23 | 23 | | Studies, now named after Dr. Long; the medical school and campus |
---|
24 | 24 | | at UT Health San Antonio bear their names as well, acknowledging |
---|
25 | 25 | | a transformational donation; benefiting UT Law, they founded the |
---|
26 | 26 | | Long Career Launch program to help recent graduates and also |
---|
27 | 27 | | endowed scholarships and a faculty chair in administrative law; |
---|
28 | 28 | | Mr. Long is a trustee of the UT Law School Foundation and |
---|
29 | 29 | | received the Law School's Honorary Order of the Coif Award, and |
---|
30 | 30 | | he has further served as a member of the Chancellor's Council and |
---|
31 | 31 | | the UT Development Board; in 2018, the Longs were recognized with |
---|
32 | 32 | | the UT System Regents' highest honor, the Santa Rita Award; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | Mr. Long and Dr. Long also received UT's Distinguished Alumnus |
---|
34 | 34 | | Award and the Presidential Citation; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, In 1999, the Longs provided a lead gift of $20 |
---|
36 | 36 | | million for the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the |
---|
37 | 37 | | Performing Arts in Austin; Mr. Long has given generously of his |
---|
38 | 38 | | expertise as president of the Austin Symphony Orchestra Society |
---|
39 | 39 | | and as a member of the Arts Center Stage board; in 2005, he and |
---|
40 | 40 | | Dr. Long were awarded the Texas Medal of Arts; their many joint |
---|
41 | 41 | | accolades also include the Ohtli Award from the Consulate General |
---|
42 | 42 | | of Mexico in Austin; additionally, Mr. Long has served on the |
---|
43 | 43 | | boards of the Headliners Club, the Seton Fund, and Caritas of |
---|
44 | 44 | | Austin; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Joe and Terry Long have made a lasting, positive |
---|
46 | 46 | | difference in the lives of many Texans through their support for |
---|
47 | 47 | | education, the arts, and countless other worthy causes, and their |
---|
48 | 48 | | sterling example of civic leadership is a source of inspiration |
---|
49 | 49 | | to all; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, Theirs is a lifelong love story that culminated in |
---|
51 | 51 | | their sharing that love with the people and especially the |
---|
52 | 52 | | children and future teachers, doctors, and other professionals |
---|
53 | 53 | | and leaders of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
---|
54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
55 | 55 | | Legislature, hereby honor Joe R. and Dr. Teresa Lozano Long for |
---|
56 | 56 | | their exceptional contributions and extend to him sincere best |
---|
57 | 57 | | wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |

58 | 58 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
