4 | 4 | | venues, the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, on May 12, |

6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The theatre is named in honor of Jesse Wright |
---|
7 | 7 | | Miller, a mining engineer and cotton broker, who left property to |
---|
8 | 8 | | the city for municipal purposes upon his death; the proceeds from |
---|
9 | 9 | | the sale of the Miller estate were used to build a permanent |
---|
10 | 10 | | bandstand in Hermann Park, initially called the Miller Memorial |
---|
11 | 11 | | Theatre; on May 12, 1923, the first presentation at the venue, |
---|
12 | 12 | | Springtimes of Our Nation, featured some 2,500 performers, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | the theatre's inaugural production, The Rose Maiden, was led by |
---|
14 | 14 | | the director of city bands on May 18; in the ensuing years, sports |
---|
15 | 15 | | fans gathered at the venue to listen to radio broadcasts of the |
---|
16 | 16 | | World Series and world championship boxing matches, and in 1941, |
---|
17 | 17 | | the Houston Symphony played its first free concert there; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The city built a new theatre in 1968, and the |
---|
19 | 19 | | award-winning structure opened on September 1 with a performance |
---|
20 | 20 | | by the Houston Symphony; that same year marked the beginning of a |
---|
21 | 21 | | 55-year history of annual musicals presented by the Theatre Under |
---|
22 | 22 | | the Stars company; today, events at Miller range from |
---|
23 | 23 | | performances by the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet to |
---|
24 | 24 | | celebrations of Juneteenth and Cinco de Mayo; with the guidance |
---|
25 | 25 | | of the Miller Theatre Advisory Board and Houston First |
---|
26 | 26 | | Corporation and with funding from the City of Houston and the |
---|
27 | 27 | | generous support of other sponsors, the Miller Outdoor Theatre |

28 | 28 | | currently offers an eight-month season of free performances, and |

29 | 29 | | it attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees each year; and |

30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Over the past century, the Miller Outdoor |

31 | 31 | | Theatre has entertained countless audiences, showcased the |

32 | 32 | | talent of numerous performers, and greatly contributed to the |

33 | 33 | | cultural vitality of the community, and it is a pleasure to |

34 | 34 | | honor this beloved landmark on this important milestone; now, |

36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
