11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 494
22 WHEREAS, Residents of Houston are celebrating the 100th
33 anniversary of one of the city's most popular performing arts
44 venues, the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, on May 12,
55 2023; and
66 WHEREAS, The theatre is named in honor of Jesse Wright
77 Miller, a mining engineer and cotton broker, who left property to
88 the city for municipal purposes upon his death; the proceeds from
99 the sale of the Miller estate were used to build a permanent
1010 bandstand in Hermann Park, initially called the Miller Memorial
1111 Theatre; on May 12, 1923, the first presentation at the venue,
1212 Springtimes of Our Nation, featured some 2,500 performers, and
1313 the theatre's inaugural production, The Rose Maiden, was led by
1414 the director of city bands on May 18; in the ensuing years, sports
1515 fans gathered at the venue to listen to radio broadcasts of the
1616 World Series and world championship boxing matches, and in 1941,
1717 the Houston Symphony played its first free concert there; and
1818 WHEREAS, The city built a new theatre in 1968, and the
1919 award-winning structure opened on September 1 with a performance
2020 by the Houston Symphony; that same year marked the beginning of a
2121 55-year history of annual musicals presented by the Theatre Under
2222 the Stars company; today, events at Miller range from
2323 performances by the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet to
2424 celebrations of Juneteenth and Cinco de Mayo; with the guidance
2525 of the Miller Theatre Advisory Board and Houston First
2626 Corporation and with funding from the City of Houston and the
2727 generous support of other sponsors, the Miller Outdoor Theatre
2828 currently offers an eight-month season of free performances, and
2929 it attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees each year; and
3030 WHEREAS, Over the past century, the Miller Outdoor
3131 Theatre has entertained countless audiences, showcased the
3232 talent of numerous performers, and greatly contributed to the
3333 cultural vitality of the community, and it is a pleasure to
3434 honor this beloved landmark on this important milestone; now,
3535 therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3737 Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
3838 Miller Outdoor Theatre and extend to all those involved in its
3939 operation sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
4040 further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4242 prepared for the theatre as an expression of high regard from the
4343 Texas Senate.
