11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 501
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Cris Rivera, who retired as chief executive officer of
44 Rio Grande Regional Hospital on March 31, 2023, after a
55 distinguished career of more than 36 years in health care
66 management with Hospital Corporation of America Healthcare; and
77 WHEREAS, Cris Rivera is a visionary leader in health care
88 administration whose diligence and dedication have benefited
99 countless staff members and patients at the hospitals she has
1010 served; a native of Edinburg, Cris was named chief executive
1111 officer of Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen in November of
1212 2012, and she became the first Hispanic woman to serve in the
1313 position; and
1414 WHEREAS, While earning her bachelor's degree from
1515 Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Cris began her career in
1616 health care by working as a phlebotomist; she went on to earn her
1717 master's degree in administration and health care management
1818 from Our Lady of the Lake University, and she first joined the
1919 staff of Rio Grande Regional Hospital in 1982 and was employed as
2020 a lab supervisor; and
2121 WHEREAS, Cris went on to serve in top leadership roles at a
2222 number of other HCA Healthcare-affiliated hospitals in Texas,
2323 Kansas, and Louisiana before returning to Rio Grande Regional
2424 Hospital in 2012 to begin her tenure as chief executive officer;
2525 under her leadership, the institutions she served were
2626 recognized among the nation's top-performing hospitals, and Cris
2727 was instrumental in successfully implementing plans for facility
2828 expansion and renovation projects and in establishing
2929 specialized health care clinics; and
3030 WHEREAS, While serving at Rio Grande Regional Hospital,
3131 Cris was devoted to her mission to recruit talented and dedicated
3232 physicians to South Texas and to make quality health care more
3333 accessible to the residents of the Rio Grande Valley; among her
3434 achievements as chief executive officer, she recently signed an
3535 agreement partnering Rio Grande Regional Hospital and HCA
3636 Healthcare with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley;
3737 through this partnership, resident physicians from the
3838 university's medical school will be placed in training positions
3939 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital and at Valley Regional Medical
4040 Center in Brownsville; and
4141 WHEREAS, Widely respected and admired for her effective
4242 leadership and prudent administration, Cris worked to create a
4343 rewarding environment for her staff and to empower them to pursue
4444 excellence in health care; her passion for serving her community
4545 and her uncompromising commitment to the highest standards of
4646 health care management have greatly benefited the residents of
4747 the Rio Grande Valley, she is indeed deserving of special
4848 recognition on her outstanding accomplishments; now, therefore,
4949 be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
5151 Legislature, hereby commend Cris Rivera on her years of exemplary
5252 leadership in health care management and extend to her
5353 congratulations on her retirement and best wishes for the future;
5454 and, be it further
5555 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5656 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
