| 4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, The community traces its roots to 1598, when |

| 5 | 5 | | Spanish explorer Juan de Oñate reached the Rio Grande near the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | present-day site of the city; the El Camino Real de Tierra |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Adentro trade route between Mexico City and Santa Fe passed |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | through the area, and a settlement named Hacienda de los |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Tiburcios was founded before 1760; in 1789, a Spanish presidio |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | was established, and the town that grew up around it became known |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | as San Elizario; formerly part of the Mexican state of Chihuahua, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | the town became part of Texas following the signing of the Treaty |

| 13 | 13 | | of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848; and |

| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Today, San Elizario is a popular stop on the El |

| 15 | 15 | | Paso Mission Trail and is home to such attractions as the San |

| 16 | 16 | | Elizario Presidio Chapel, the Old El Paso County Jail Museum, and |

| 17 | 17 | | Los Portales Casa Garcia museum; the widespread use of adobe |

| 18 | 18 | | construction and the territorial and pueblo revival architecture |

| 19 | 19 | | found throughout the town help to preserve its historical |

| 20 | 20 | | aesthetic; in addition, San Elizario features a number of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | galleries displaying the work of local artists, and the city |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | holds special events such as the Art Market and the Billy the Kid |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Festival that feature gunfighting reenactments, live music, and |
|---|

| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, With its rich history and characteristic charm, |

| 26 | 26 | | San Elizario is a delight for residents and visitors alike, and |

| 27 | 27 | | the town is indeed deserving of this notable accolade; now, |
