2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Members of Atascosa County law enforcement |

3 | 3 | | agencies demonstrated tremendous courage in the line of duty on |
---|
4 | 4 | | June 2, 2022, when they risked their lives to stop an escaped |
---|
5 | 5 | | prisoner and suspected murderer from fleeing the country; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The suspect was accused of killing a family of |
---|
7 | 7 | | five in Centerville after he escaped from a prison transport |
---|
8 | 8 | | bus on May 12; when Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward |
---|
9 | 9 | | received word that the suspect could be headed to the area in |
---|
10 | 10 | | an apparent attempt to reach the U.S.-Mexico border, he |
---|
11 | 11 | | quickly mobilized his deputies for a large-scale manhunt, |
---|
12 | 12 | | which involved constables and officers from the Pleasanton, |
---|
13 | 13 | | Jourdanton, Poteet, and Lytle Police Departments, as well as |
---|
14 | 14 | | DPS troopers and U.S. Marshals; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Officers from these various agencies were posted |
---|
16 | 16 | | at all highways and major roads headed south, and just before 10 |
---|
17 | 17 | | p.m., Atascosa County Animal Control chief Henry Dominguez |
---|
18 | 18 | | reported that he and a deputy sheriff had sighted the suspect, |
---|
19 | 19 | | who was driving a stolen pickup truck and was armed with an |
---|
20 | 20 | | AR-15-style rifle and a pistol; Officer Dominguez was instructed |
---|
21 | 21 | | to follow the suspect, while other personnel drove ahead of the |
---|
22 | 22 | | fleeing suspect to intercept him and deployed spikes in his path |
---|
23 | 23 | | to puncture the vehicle's tires; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Before reaching the edge of Jourdanton, |
---|
25 | 25 | | Jourdanton Police Chief Eric Kaiser successfully spiked all four |
---|
26 | 26 | | of the vehicle's tires as the suspect attempted to evade law |
---|
27 | 27 | | enforcement by driving into a field; the suspect fired his rifle |
---|
28 | 28 | | at oncoming deputies before losing control of his vehicle and |
---|
29 | 29 | | crashing into a utility pole and then a fence; after exiting the |
---|
30 | 30 | | vehicle with a rifle in hand, the suspect was shot and killed, |
---|
31 | 31 | | bringing his 22-day crime spree to an end; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The exceptional bravery displayed by the Atascosa |
---|
33 | 33 | | County law enforcement officers was met with an outpouring of |
---|
34 | 34 | | gratitude from the community, and Sheriff Soward awarded |
---|
35 | 35 | | commendations to 14 officers; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Atascosa County law |
---|
37 | 37 | | enforcement agencies went to heroic lengths to protect their |
---|
38 | 38 | | community and prevent further violence, and in so doing, they |
---|
39 | 39 | | exemplified the highest ideals of their profession; now, |
---|
40 | 40 | | therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby commend the officers in Atascosa County for |
---|
43 | 43 | | their role in stopping an escaped convict and suspected murderer |
---|
44 | 44 | | and extend to them sincere appreciation for their dedicated |
---|
45 | 45 | | service; and, be it further |

46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

47 | 47 | | prepared for the law enforcement units across Atascosa County as |
