2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Texas Christian University is celebrating its |

3 | 3 | | 150th anniversary in 2023; and |
---|
4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, TCU was founded in 1873 in Thorp Spring by |
---|
5 | 5 | | brothers Addison and Randolph Clark, ministers and teachers from |
---|
6 | 6 | | nearby Fort Worth; they welcomed 13 students to Add-Ran Male and |
---|
7 | 7 | | Female College, and within five years, enrollment reached 450; |
---|
8 | 8 | | after affiliating with the Christian Church (Disciples of |
---|
9 | 9 | | Christ), the institution became known as Add-Ran Christian |
---|
10 | 10 | | University, and in 1895, it moved to Waco; the school soon chose a |
---|
11 | 11 | | mascot, the horned frog, and its colors, purple and white; it |
---|
12 | 12 | | adopted its present-day name in 1902; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1910, a major fire destroyed the main |
---|
14 | 14 | | building and badly damaged other facilities; in the wake of |
---|
15 | 15 | | that disaster, the college accepted Fort Worth's offer of 50 |
---|
16 | 16 | | acres and $200,000 to relocate to the city; on its new campus, |
---|
17 | 17 | | the institution flourished, and the end of World War II marked |
---|
18 | 18 | | the beginning of a long period of significant growth; TCU |
---|
19 | 19 | | purchased an adjoining 106-acre golf course and by 1965, it had |
---|
20 | 20 | | added more than 25 buildings; gaining stature, it toughened |
---|
21 | 21 | | entrance requirements, expanded advanced study offerings, and |
---|
22 | 22 | | approved Ph.D. programs; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, TCU has continued its rise in the 21st century, |
---|
24 | 24 | | opening the Campus Commons, including the Brown-Lupton |
---|
25 | 25 | | University Union, and establishing the John V. Roach Honors |
---|
26 | 26 | | College; Anne Burnett Marion School of Medicine, Fort Worth's |
---|
27 | 27 | | M.D. school, has an enrollment of 240 and will graduate its first |
---|
28 | 28 | | class in 2023; moreover the endowment has passed the $2 billion |
---|
29 | 29 | | mark, and enrollment today is approximately 12,000; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, TCU has gained a reputation for |
---|
31 | 31 | | academic excellence, strong traditions, a vibrant student |
---|
32 | 32 | | experience, campus culture, and Greek life, and ardent support |
---|
33 | 33 | | for student-athletes, who have achieved high recognition; the |
---|
34 | 34 | | Horned Frogs have been particularly dominant in baseball, making |
---|
35 | 35 | | five College World Series appearances in the past 13 years, as |
---|
36 | 36 | | well as in equestrian events, tennis, and women's soccer, among |
---|
37 | 37 | | other sports; the 2022 football team became the first team in |
---|
38 | 38 | | Texas to earn the opportunity to compete for the national |
---|
39 | 39 | | championship in the College Football Playoff; since 2010, the TCU |
---|
40 | 40 | | rifle team has won three national championships, and it is the |
---|
41 | 41 | | only all-female team to win a national title in this coed sport; |
---|
42 | 42 | | the men's basketball team has made three NCAA tournament |
---|
43 | 43 | | appearances in the last six seasons; and |
---|
44 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Today, TCU is a world-class, values-centered |
---|
45 | 45 | | private university, comprised of nine schools and colleges, and |
---|
46 | 46 | | it has a legacy of creating leaders who shape and improve the |
---|
47 | 47 | | world for the greater good; it offers an unmatched student |
---|
48 | 48 | | experience and academic environment to students from diverse |
---|
49 | 49 | | backgrounds from Fort Worth, the state of Texas, and across the |
---|
50 | 50 | | globe; and |
---|
51 | 51 | | WHEREAS, TCU students, faculty, and staff offer valuable |
---|
52 | 52 | | research, scholarly activity, artistic and cultural assets, a |
---|
53 | 53 | | diverse array of talent, and significant economic benefit to the |
---|
54 | 54 | | region and state; the rich history of Texas Christian University |
---|
55 | 55 | | is a source of tremendous pride to its network of more than |
---|
56 | 56 | | 100,000 alumni around the world, and this outstanding |
---|
57 | 57 | | institution is sure to continue to build on this foundation of |
---|
58 | 58 | | excellence in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
59 | 59 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
60 | 60 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of Texas |
---|
61 | 61 | | Christian University and extend to the TCU community sincere |
---|
62 | 62 | | best wishes for a memorable and meaningful celebration; and, |
---|
