5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The city of Raymondville lost a beloved resident |
---|
6 | 6 | | with the passing of Gloria Ann Reyes Garcia on June 6, 2019, at |
---|
7 | 7 | | the age of 66; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of two migrant workers, Jose and |
---|
9 | 9 | | Santos Sosa, Gloria Reyes Garcia was born in Raymondville on |
---|
10 | 10 | | August 14, 1952, and she grew up with the companionship of five |
---|
11 | 11 | | brothers, Jose, Juan, Gilbert, Noe, and Ricardo, and seven |
---|
12 | 12 | | sisters, Josephina, Maria, Herminia, Adela, Lydia, Tina, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | Brenda; in her youth, she attended Raymondville schools while |
---|
14 | 14 | | also working alongside her family in the fields; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Gloria went on to take a job with the Last Yellow |
---|
16 | 16 | | Bus, a migrant outreach program in which she drove people to and |
---|
17 | 17 | | from medical appointments and delivered medications; she |
---|
18 | 18 | | eventually joined the referral department of Su Clinica Familiar |
---|
19 | 19 | | and served in several different positions, including assistant |
---|
20 | 20 | | social worker and migrant hospital coordinator, before being |
---|
21 | 21 | | promoted to clinic manager in 1977; she later embarked on a |
---|
22 | 22 | | rewarding second career in real estate; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Gloria was extremely active in her community and |
---|
24 | 24 | | held leadership positions in a number of organizations, |
---|
25 | 25 | | including the Raymondville Independent School District Board of |
---|
26 | 26 | | Trustees, where she served as president, successfully advocated |
---|
27 | 27 | | for the passage of two school bonds, which led to the creation of |
---|
28 | 28 | | a new high school in Raymondville, and helped secure salary |
---|
29 | 29 | | increases for teachers and support staff, and the Su Clinica |
---|
30 | 30 | | Familiar Board of Directors; in addition, she was a member of the |
---|
31 | 31 | | National Advisory Council on Migrant Health and also gave freely |
---|
32 | 32 | | of her time assisting survivors of sexual assault; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Reyes Garcia was the proud mother of five |
---|
34 | 34 | | children, Ricardo, Sandra, Jennifer, Stacey, and Erica; with the |
---|
35 | 35 | | passing years, she had the privilege of watching her family grow |
---|
36 | 36 | | to include 15 grandchildren, John, Isabella, Colt, Mikeal, |
---|
37 | 37 | | Mikaela, Madeline, Carlos, Feliberto, Jaime, Emily, Amelia, |
---|
38 | 38 | | Jeweliana, Jesse, Jaxson, and Ophelia; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Although the death of Gloria Reyes Garcia brought |
---|
40 | 40 | | great sorrow to those who loved her, her life was an inspiring |
---|
41 | 41 | | example of the good that one person can accomplish; now, |
---|
42 | 42 | | therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Gloria Ann Reyes |
---|
45 | 45 | | Garcia and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her |
---|
46 | 46 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

48 | 48 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
