55 WHEREAS, The city of Raymondville lost a beloved resident
66 with the passing of Gloria Ann Reyes Garcia on June 6, 2019, at
77 the age of 66; and
88 WHEREAS, The daughter of two migrant workers, Jose and
99 Santos Sosa, Gloria Reyes Garcia was born in Raymondville on
1010 August 14, 1952, and she grew up with the companionship of five
1111 brothers, Jose, Juan, Gilbert, Noe, and Ricardo, and seven
1212 sisters, Josephina, Maria, Herminia, Adela, Lydia, Tina, and
1313 Brenda; in her youth, she attended Raymondville schools while
1414 also working alongside her family in the fields; and
1515 WHEREAS, Gloria went on to take a job with the Last Yellow
1616 Bus, a migrant outreach program in which she drove people to and
1717 from medical appointments and delivered medications; she
1818 eventually joined the referral department of Su Clinica Familiar
1919 and served in several different positions, including assistant
2020 social worker and migrant hospital coordinator, before being
2121 promoted to clinic manager in 1977; she later embarked on a
2222 rewarding second career in real estate; and
2323 WHEREAS, Gloria was extremely active in her community and
2424 held leadership positions in a number of organizations,
2525 including the Raymondville Independent School District Board of
2626 Trustees, where she served as president, successfully advocated
2727 for the passage of two school bonds, which led to the creation of
2828 a new high school in Raymondville, and helped secure salary
2929 increases for teachers and support staff, and the Su Clinica
3030 Familiar Board of Directors; in addition, she was a member of the
3131 National Advisory Council on Migrant Health and also gave freely
3232 of her time assisting survivors of sexual assault; and
3333 WHEREAS, Mrs. Reyes Garcia was the proud mother of five
3434 children, Ricardo, Sandra, Jennifer, Stacey, and Erica; with the
3535 passing years, she had the privilege of watching her family grow
3636 to include 15 grandchildren, John, Isabella, Colt, Mikeal,
3737 Mikaela, Madeline, Carlos, Feliberto, Jaime, Emily, Amelia,
3838 Jeweliana, Jesse, Jaxson, and Ophelia; and
3939 WHEREAS, Although the death of Gloria Reyes Garcia brought
4040 great sorrow to those who loved her, her life was an inspiring
4141 example of the good that one person can accomplish; now,
4242 therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4444 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Gloria Ann Reyes
4545 Garcia and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her
4646 passing; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4848 prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
4949 this day, it do so in memory of Gloria Reyes Garcia.
