66 WHEREAS, The Bowie News celebrated the 100th anniversary of
77 its founding in 2022; and
88 WHEREAS, Originally known as the Bowie Booster, this
99 respected community newspaper was first published by Robert Murphy
1010 on February 9, 1922; in the late 1930s, it was purchased by Lum
1111 Lovette and renamed the Bowie News; the publication went on to
1212 change hands several times during the decades that followed, and in
1313 1953, it was combined with the Montague County Times under the
1414 ownership of Harlow E. Tibbetts; in 1958, the paper released a
1515 special 92-page issue in honor of Montague County's centennial,
1616 which remains an indispensable chronicle of the county's history
1717 today; and
1818 WHEREAS, The Bowie News was purchased by James H. Winter in
1919 1965, and during his 37-year tenure, it adopted new technology and
2020 won top awards from the Texas Press Association and other media
2121 organizations; after Mr. Winter's passing, his son Michael Winter
2222 assumed ownership of the paper in 2011, and he went on to launch
2323 Post Oak Media with the Bowie News as its flagship publication; in
2424 the years since, the paper has expanded its coverage to all of
2525 Montague County, and it now operates a popular website, social
2626 media pages, and an e-subscription service; and
2727 WHEREAS, In addition to multiple awards from the Texas Press
2828 Association for newswriting, photography, sports coverage, and
2929 advertising design, the staff of the Bowie News has been recognized
3030 with the TPA Community Service Award for its Build a Better Bowie
3131 campaign and with the Community Support Award from the Bowie
3232 Chamber of Commerce; recently, the paper was presented with a Texas
3333 Treasure Business Award in recognition of its century of service to
3434 the community; and
3535 WHEREAS, The Bowie News has served as a vital resource to
3636 generations of Montague County residents, and it is a pleasure to
3737 pay tribute to the publication for its strong commitment to both
3838 quality journalism and community engagement; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
4040 hereby honor the Bowie News on the occasion of its 100th anniversary
4141 and extend to all those associated with the paper sincere best
4242 wishes for continued success with their important work.
