| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Bowie News celebrated the 100th anniversary of |

| 7 | 7 | | its founding in 2022; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Originally known as the Bowie Booster, this |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | respected community newspaper was first published by Robert Murphy |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | on February 9, 1922; in the late 1930s, it was purchased by Lum |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Lovette and renamed the Bowie News; the publication went on to |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | change hands several times during the decades that followed, and in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 1953, it was combined with the Montague County Times under the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | ownership of Harlow E. Tibbetts; in 1958, the paper released a |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | special 92-page issue in honor of Montague County's centennial, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | which remains an indispensable chronicle of the county's history |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | today; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Bowie News was purchased by James H. Winter in |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | 1965, and during his 37-year tenure, it adopted new technology and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | won top awards from the Texas Press Association and other media |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | organizations; after Mr. Winter's passing, his son Michael Winter |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | assumed ownership of the paper in 2011, and he went on to launch |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Post Oak Media with the Bowie News as its flagship publication; in |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the years since, the paper has expanded its coverage to all of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Montague County, and it now operates a popular website, social |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | media pages, and an e-subscription service; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, In addition to multiple awards from the Texas Press |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Association for newswriting, photography, sports coverage, and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | advertising design, the staff of the Bowie News has been recognized |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | with the TPA Community Service Award for its Build a Better Bowie |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | campaign and with the Community Support Award from the Bowie |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Chamber of Commerce; recently, the paper was presented with a Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Treasure Business Award in recognition of its century of service to |

|---|
| 35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, The Bowie News has served as a vital resource to |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | generations of Montague County residents, and it is a pleasure to |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | pay tribute to the publication for its strong commitment to both |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | quality journalism and community engagement; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | hereby honor the Bowie News on the occasion of its 100th anniversary |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | and extend to all those associated with the paper sincere best |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | wishes for continued success with their important work. |
