2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Representatives of The University of Texas |

3 | 3 | | Permian Basin are gathering at the State Capitol on May 3, 2023, |
---|
4 | 4 | | providing a fitting opportunity to recognize the institution for |
---|
5 | 5 | | its 50 years of service; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Established in Odessa as a branch campus of The |
---|
7 | 7 | | University of Texas System in 1973, UTPB was initially an |
---|
8 | 8 | | upper-level institution that only accepted junior, senior, and |
---|
9 | 9 | | graduate students; its first freshman class, known as the |
---|
10 | 10 | | "Pioneer Freshmen," entered the school in 1991; over the years, |
---|
11 | 11 | | the university has expanded to include five academic colleges |
---|
12 | 12 | | that together offer more than 75 undergraduate and graduate |
---|
13 | 13 | | degrees, and it encompasses the main campus in Odessa as well as |
---|
14 | 14 | | the Midland Campus; to date, there have been over 28,800 UTPB |
---|
15 | 15 | | graduates; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, UTPB has played an instrumental role in the growth |
---|
17 | 17 | | and vitality of the Permian Basin region; the university serves |
---|
18 | 18 | | as a major source of skilled workers for the area's oil and gas |
---|
19 | 19 | | industry, and its liberal arts programs have contributed to the |
---|
20 | 20 | | unique culture of local communities; in addition, the university |
---|
21 | 21 | | has helped the region tackle critical issues related to the |
---|
22 | 22 | | energy industry, education, the environment, and public health; |
---|
23 | 23 | | and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, To meet the diverse educational needs of its |
---|
25 | 25 | | students, UTPB has opened a wide variety of facilities, including |
---|
26 | 26 | | its engineering complex and the Wagner Noël Performing Arts |
---|
27 | 27 | | Center in Midland County and the D. Kirk Edwards Family Human |
---|
28 | 28 | | Performance Center in Odessa; the university has also worked to |
---|
29 | 29 | | increase access to higher education by partnering with school |
---|
30 | 30 | | districts and establishing the Falcon Free program, which covers |
---|
31 | 31 | | the cost of tuition and fees for students in need; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Since its founding 50 years ago, The University of |
---|
33 | 33 | | Texas Permian Basin has provided many Texans with a strong |
---|
34 | 34 | | foundation for achievement, and it is a pleasure to join in |
---|
35 | 35 | | recognizing the institution on this milestone occasion; now, |
---|
36 | 36 | | therefore, be it |

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of The |
---|
39 | 39 | | University of Texas Permian Basin on the occasion of UTPB Day at |
---|
40 | 40 | | the State Capitol on May 3, 2023, and extend to all those |
---|
41 | 41 | | associated with the institution sincere best wishes for the |
---|
42 | 42 | | future; and, be it further |

43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

44 | 44 | | prepared for the university as an expression of high regard from |

45 | 45 | | the Texas Senate. |
